Got the rebuild kit to refurbish the starter. Drive, brushes, bushing...the original gaskets on the OEM casing around the end brush cover band and shift lever cover are toast. RTV a viable solution? Any words of advice as I have never done this but looks pretty straightforward are always welcome.

Which engine is that for, and is there any late model starter that would bolt on?

I'd do that rebuild since you have it, but ideally there's a common easy to buy late model starter that will work. I remember having to change my starter almost once a year in the early 80's, it was a lifetime starter from AutoShack. After the 3rd one died I knew the quality was very poor, and those large starters were harder to change, plus I had headers on the 351C-4V.

The late model 302 starter should be possible to work on any SBF, given the right flexplate/flywheel(164 teeth). I've never done it and don't know if the tooth count is compatible on any older Fords. Just a thought, I much prefer better parts that are common and easy to get.

just make sure you're not going to bind it up

Sorry it's for a 351-4v Cleveland (1972). Trying to keep things as close to original, but prepared to spring for a new one.
The gaskets both are on the outside of the case, brush cover and shift lever cover both rest on outside of case. I tried to save them but they were really brittle and useless. Nice amount of carbon falling out of the case as I took the end cap off. Going real slow & taking my time (therapy)
Thanks!

The gaskets should only be critical if they affect how far the teeth engage into the flexplate/flywheel. If they are just for sealing the solenoid cover etc, those are mainly to keep out debris. A very small amount of Ultra Black RTV is okay for almost any sealing needs. If you use some, make it very little, it makes it hard to get the parts to let go if there's a lot on them.

Yep, just for sealing - won't impact the depth to engage flywheel. I had planned on using the black RTV, just wanted to bounce it here & see if anyone had any issues in a similar situation. Thanks everyone as always

Ahh...got it. Yeah, won't be forcing anything thats for sure. Once the case is emptied of all the carbon residue I'll probably have plenty of clearance! After I'm done it will be off to local electric shop for testing.

BTW, NPD actually carries the gasket for the plunger cover. Part # 11065-1A. Hope it fits mine
