That is a pretty tall tire. My Wrangler has 33-12.50's and that is only 1 inch taller. My '72 wagon has 275/60-17's and they really fill up the wheelwell. They are 12 inches wide, but not 32 inches tall, though.

I like a very tall tire, but I know you sacrifice width.  I used to run a 255 70 15 on the rear.  I plan to again. Big smile

I'm using lifted springs on the rear, they'll fit

If not my other option is 285/70/17

Tall tires get close to the rocker, but that could be cut. The problem I ran into was the frame near the lower control arm mount in the front. The frame curves out to the rocker and limits how tall you can get away with. I suppose a lot of dish would help, but tucking the tire in would require some surgery. Here's an old snapshot of mine with 29.5/11.5 slicks squeezed on some 7.5" ET's. everything actually tucked inside the wheel well, but did leave rub marks on the frame.

Assuming your car hasn't been lifted though? I'm planning on using a 1.5" lifting block on the rear in order to get some extra height and bring the tyres down past the usual point on the body a bit

A lot of people seem to get away with using wider tyres 305/315 but no one seems to like tall tyres.....I like a tall tyre so 285/70/17 should be able to fit with some fettling, even if I need to roll the arch or something like that

255/70-16 will fit on the back of a 79 t-bird using crown vic wheels, but they hit the back corner of the wheel openings in the front wheel wells when cornering. (looked wrong too...)

Actually, lifting the car is going to bring the rear closer to the front as it arcs down. I'm not concerned with the fender lip or even the rocker as those can be easily modified. The frame at the lower control arm is going to be the problem. You mentioned using a 4.5" backspace, so a tire with a 32 plus inch diameter probably won't clear the frame that far in. I've got nothing against tall tires, but an 11.5 inch wide tire that tall is going to be a tight fit unless you hang it out the fender.
A simple jig made from a wood or metal strip bolted to the drum at your desired diameter should help. Just measure straight back from the end of the jig and see how much width/height you can get away with at the frame. Looking forward to see your progress.

295/45-18's are 28.3" tall with an 11-1/2" cross section. On a 9-1/2" rim w/ a 5" backspace, they clear the lip and frame rail (at its' tightest point, in front) with 1/2"-3/4" clearance. Still has 5" of sidewall to give the appearance some 'beef' but, at 40 psi, the sidewalls don't flex and let things rub. That's what I've been running (without incident) for the past two years. Still want to drop the rear end 1" to 1-1/2", and may consider trimming the lip a bit at that point, but there's been no drama and the tire fills the wheelwell nicely.

285/70/15 fit with no issues so I don't see 285/70/17 or 65/17 being an issue! Tall tyres here I come

285/70-17 is 2" bigger height-wise than 285/70-15
So it will need 1 more inch of clearance and be almost 33" tall

1 more inch of clearance vertically shouldn't be an issue though, a good set of springs should sort that

I can go 285/65/17 if needed but that throws my gearing off a bit, I've calculated my 5 speed conversion with 4.86 gears using a 32.5" tyre which is what the 285/70/17 equates to.

I'd have to drop to 4.75:1 using the 65 wall tyre, not a huge issue admittedly but the price difference for tyres makes me want to get the 70 on there as they're cheaper!

My F150 with the 4 X 4 Off Road package has 265/70-17 Michelins. That is a LOT of tire. If anyone wants to see what that size looks like under a Torino, I have one of the old Michelins I removed from the truck and can stick under the '75 GTS I have on the trailer. I can jack it up until the wheels come off the ground to see what kind of clearance it would have.

They'll fill the arches nicely, they're an inch bigger than my current wheels and slightly smaller than the 285/70/15s which were fitted to someone else's car!

Means they should definitely fit as I measured .9" clearance to the lip of the arch, these are a full inch bigger so .5" should give me .4" clearance......looking forward to getting them on once the sun comes up!

Anybody running 18x9.5? I'm looking at a set of mustang wheels pretty cheap.
I need to find wheels to work with the tire size I'll be running, 285/35/18 in the rear, 265/35/18 in the front. I want to run a set of Michelin Pilot Super Sport, so I got to find rims to work with it.

Yeah, the backspacing on newer model Mustangs is about the same as FWD.  You'd need at least 1.5 - 2.0" spacers.  If you could find wheels for a 94-04 Mustang, the offset would be closer.  You could get by with 1.0" spacers.  I think that's what Joe uses for his Bullitt wheels.

Yes. 18x9.5 (5" BS) out back, with 295/45-18's. Worked out perfectly.
