While installing my new drag radials today I decided to mount up a few different wheel/tire combos I have and take some pictures for you guys.

1st up: 255/50R17's on 17x8 alum wheels with 4.5" backspace.
-This is my road race/street setup.  I really like them a lot.

2nd: 255/65R16's on 16x7 alum wheels with 4.25" backspace from a Ford Ranger.
-I run these on my 68 Mercury.  At 29x10.5, they're pushing the limit of what will fit the 73 but I think they actually look nice.  Not a chance the tires would work on the front though, just too big.

3rd: 255/60R15 drag radials on 15x8 steels with 4" backspace.
-Same tread width as 275/60's but a little shorter.  I think they look a little goofy but they fit and they're sticky.

Man...I like the GT-M...'73's look bad ass.
I sort of always debated what I late model ranger wheel would have looked like. If that was a 8" wheel instead of a 7", I would of almost gone that route.
On those drag radials...I would of picked up the 295/65r15's. They are huge, fat tires but DAMN just fills up the tubs.

Thanks.  I would have preferred the new 295/55R15 size but it would have been almost twice the price with the new wheels they'd require.  These are the wheels I had and the 255's are what fit them.  Plus, with them having the same exterior dimensions as my street tires, I can use one as a spare.

True... the cost on that size tire ain't exactly cheap.

Carl-
Stupid question, are you in California? And does your GT-M have a 347 stroker in it?
I ask because when a buddy of mine, when he lived in Tracy, CA built a 347 for a red GT-M...

Wait, scratch that, it was a '72 GT-M. Confused

305/50/20 that thing looks WOW!!
20 inch rim would HAVE to be classic and not look like some stupid wagon wheel.

I need to act fast before they're gone. How will they fit/look?

Without screwing you all up a bit, keep in mind, these are technically almost 11" wide, but the 10" is bead to bead area.
Anyways...the 15x10, 5" back space.
With the short 295 50 15 on all 4 corners, you can rocket down the road.
Just as a warning, big wide tires on any vehicle, will want to grab at ruts some times.
Out back, though, you are fine.

And, lastly, anyone interested?
I had ta ask again Wink

I will do $125 shipped to your door for the pair...and it keeps me from wanting to mount up some DOT drag slicks...

Andy,
Did you sell them yet?
Jim

Hi Jim
I am looking at purchasing some Ansen Sprint wheels next week for my 75 Gran Torino. I am getting 15x7 front Tyre 235/60/15 and back 15 x 8 tyre 275/60 15. My question is what back spacing should I go to ensure not tyre rub.
Cheers

I ran 15x8's with 4" backspace and 275/60R15's.  They sat a little further outboard than I liked.  4.5 or 4.75 backspace would have been better.  So.....4" backspace with 15x7 would be fine.

Pg. 12 I run ansen Sprint on my 74,  back spacing  was not  an issue( Same as stock wheel) same wheel and tire on rear, but using 215- 70 on front,  I run 245 60 7'' on front of my 73 again  no need to change backspacing . 50's then you'd have to deal with it

Welcome to the site.
To answer your question, typically a 15 x 8 inch wheel, 4 inch offset works well on that tire size.
that 275 will fill out the rear wheel well nicely.
Thumbs Up

These rims Andy has are 5" back spacing. Probably the most you could go to tuck them in. I would say for your appl. 4-5" in that range. Depends on the look you're after.

My Ansen Sprints are 8x15" and have 4.5" backspace. My tires are 235/60R15 in front and 275/60R15 rear. And it looks like that:

255/60/15 on 7" rims front
295/50/15 on 10" rims rear

And the comparison between tires OFF the car.
Left is      295/50/15 on 10" wide
Center is 275/60/15 on 7" wide
Right is    255/60/15 on 7" wide

Tomorrow I'll pull the new tires off my truck and do a 5 tire Comparison
255/60/15 on 8" rim
255/70/15 on 8" rim

then I'll put 'em up against these for a good look at all the options.
Heck I still have the Mustang 20's you can see in the pic that I can compare too!

Did some measuring today.
Have to see IF these 15x10s mounted on the Thunderbird IRS will fit properly under the car.
BEFORE I do the swap!

So, 4 pcs of 2x4 and 4 bungy cords...
Strapped the 2x4 to the inside and outside of both tires.

Made sure they are ABOVE the bulge from where the tire meets the road.

Could only go so high as the backspace has the tires actually OUTSIDE the inner edge of the brake drums.

put same thing on both tires

So NOW, I have the outer most width of the stock rear end with these tires/rims mounted
And the inside track width
I am going to lower the air shocks, set the body down on the tires and mark them so I can see where the fender lip hits the tire. Then I can measure THAT width.
Frame width is an easy measurement to get now too.
Once I have all the measurements I can mount the rims on the T-Bird IRS and check to see if it will work.

Ok so you saw the size of the 275/60/15 compared to the 295/50 and the 255/70.

NOW check out the 275/60/15 compared to a 285/30/20 on a rim and a 295/50/20 not mounted on a rim.

The 285/30/20 on a 20x10 rim

and now the HUGE 295/50/20 (no rim) with the rear end centered on the tire.

And from a different angle...

While I am at it, going to bring this back up, when I was doing my tire comparison:
Here is the side by side comparison on my stuff:

This was a side by side comparison I did for the 295/50r15 next to my new setup, the 275/50r17 and 255/50r17.
I thought I had a comparison of the 245/50r16 Kumho sport radials I had been running next to the 295/50r15, but I can't seem to find the shot I had.
