Wow, didn't realize there was such a difference between the 275/50's and 255/50's.  Those might fill out my rear wheelwell more nicely.  Hard to find them in W speed rating at a decent price though.

I don't think my tires were honestly that bad though.
I have less than $1k into my tire and wheel package, with shipping, mount and balance by a good local shop.
Depending on what sort of speeds you plan on running, you could always get into a sticker DOT legal track tire. Nitto seems to be kicking out a bunch of different speed rated tires.
I went for the 450NT because it was a good fit for what I wanted. They have a high load rating, which, honestly our cars are on the heavy side.
If you were running 15's, you could always go a little nuts and drop a complete set of 4 275/60r15 nitto drag radials on all 4 corners...get you like 15000 miles of street use Clap

While I was at Andy's I picked up the Chrome Aero Race rims with the 295/50 tires.

These are 15x10(maybe 9.5) with 5" backspace.
They fit inside the wheel lip like Andy showed.
Here it is with the air shocks full pump...

Here it is with the air shocks empty and the original saggy springs...

And a different view...

this looks good and tells me the 4.5" BS on the 15x10 will set exactly where I want it and give me the look I want.

Now just to decide whether to go 15x10 all the way around or a 15x8 on the front.
Gonna put these 15x10s on the front and give it a drive to see clearance.

Took Ol'Brown out to run some errands around town today.
The 15x10, 5"BS Aero rims on the rear.

NO RUB!!!
Hit dips, hard turns, heavy accel off lights and around corners, potholes, odd angles to raised hump driveways... NO RUBS!!!
The side pipes like to bottom out, always have.
Tomorrow I will swap out the rims, gonna put these rims on the front to see the 15x10 5"BS and 295/50/15 tires work without rubbing.

The 255/60/15 on the 15x7 hurricane rims worked great too, no rub!
so now it will be a straight swap, front to rear, rear to front.

Hello,

I know this question has probably been asked by me and many others before but I have to ask it before I order these wheels and tires!

My Vehicle:

1974 Gran Torino Sport

My Wheel and Tire setup now!

14x7 or 14x8 stock magnum wheels with 225/60/70 tires on all 4 corners.

Possible New Wheel and Tire setup!

17x8 with a 255/50/17 on the front
17x9.5 with a 275/50/17 on the back
No Airshocks!

DO YOU THINK THEY WILL FIT WITHOUT ANY CLEARANCE ISSUES?

Thanx,

Ronnie

More work...

the Chrome 15x10, 5"BS, Aero rims 295/50/15

With a yard stick against the tire to show width and clearance to fender lip

Poor man's 1/2" spacer... five 5/8" nuts. They are a HAIR over 1/2" thick...

Basically making it a 4.5" backspace rim... Clearance/line up with fender lip pics...

NO RUB, even with SAGGY OLD springs and no air in the shocks.

Put my Slots back on the rear and the Chrome 15x10, 5"BS, Aeros with 295/50/15 on the front...

BADASS LOOKING MACHINE!!!

the 5" BS on the front... had to clean all the old grease/road Grime off the upper balljoint area (it rubbed the tire, after cleaning that garbage... enough clearance for a trip down the road.
Tire does rub inner fender well/frame at the rear with wheels at full lock. Does NOT rub the front/back edge of the fender lips.
They DO rub the top underside of the fender lip with bumps and travel... the inner fender well mounting bolt heads that are on the inside of the lip. BUT that is with my OLD/SAGGY springs.
IF you wanted to run these on the front it would take a little massaging of the inner lip and mounting bolts. But WOW they look badass on the car!

4.5"BS would put the fender lip squarely on top of the tire edge and rub the lip all the way around...front/rear/top. Would need heavy tall springs to keep them underneath.

That does look good. What about a 9" rim with 5" bs and slightly narrower tire on the front? I like your rear illustration but can you show the same thing for the back spacing?

the 10" on front will work with massaging. the rear 10" works perfect with the 4.5 or 5 BS.
Problem with a 9" rim... next tire down is a 255/60 in that same size. the 275/60 looks ridiculous up front! I have them on there now! UGLY! So a 255 only needs an 8" rim. READILY AVAILABLE with a 4.5" BS

Agreed, can we consolidate some hard facts in the first post or something?  I think that would help folks out a lot.

I guess what I'm asking is you used a yardstick to show the tire to wheel lip clearance. I was wondering about that for the back spacing to see how close the tire is in the back.
Hope this clears it up a-little?????

yup, clears up what is being looked for.

As for the summary...
Look forward to seeing what is consolidated with all the options.

I hope what I have contributed will help.
Just remember that rim and tire fitment will change with specific vehicle depending on spring heights.
ie... the 15x10 w/5" BS and 295/50/15 fit and work in the front, they DO rub on MY car because it is sagging in the front...when I put the springs on... no more rub but COULD change if it rubs the front and back edge of the fenders. same problem with the 275/60/15 on a 7" w/3"BS
it will all be a good GUIDE but everyone's individual cars will differ and determine what will fit.

That looks like it would work...
I know we would have LOTS of lines from the same person! lol
I know I can contribute about 8 different tire combos!

Need a good COMMENT column... old wore out springs
or someway to do a height measurement to get good comparisons
Maybe even a fender lip height colum for front and rear with the tires on the car?

I think (IMO) I've seen more than a few people here that, for some reason like to run on the ragged edge of what works.

(Gee I got these here rims out of the back of a pickup truck at a swap meet... whatcha think I need to do to make them fit?

....... RIMS FIT THE CAR NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND!)

Sorry, I'll stop ranting :).

Some very easy baselines should be able to be made with this table. I'll do the excel and see what I can come up with.

Hey I resemble that remark! lol

I just pick things up and IF they fit great... if not oh well!
But it does give me a big database and knowledge of what does and doesn't fit.

Paul, as I have said before, that very comment is why I bought new wheels, to my specs, fit to what I know was going to work.
I have bought and sold my share of wheels...but as noted before, your mileage may vary.
