Well the spare passenger side door "might" fit into the trunk. They were big trunks but NOT deep trunks. Besides that you have two extra rear exterior panels with name script and reverse lights that go between the taillights because the one on the car now has small rust holes. Also about 10 medium to large boxes of mixed stuff. Extra rear sway bar, extra front grill, extra radiator fan surround and an extra un-cracked dash top in matching blue. Then you have 4 magnum 500 rims to boot, so NO-definately not enough room no matter how you creatively stack it all on top of the seats.
I can tell just from looking at it all because I used to pack cargo vans for a living for years to go do new york delivery runs with amway piled in with tons of pharmaceutical boxes and then mixed with bunches of lost luggage from the syracuse airport. That stuff was to the ceiling no lie but I got it all in everytime. Close on these parts fitting but about one more trunkfull short. I used to store the parts boxes in it during the winter and just the boxes alone barely fit. Oh and a full size spare comes with it too with another good super sport tire.
I "had" an extra hood, extra front clip, another pair of doors, and a pair of front fenders plus all the air conditioner components I removed from the car plus an extra set of bumpers but that stuff all sold last year.
I'll be selling some of the extra parts as time goes on and nobody buys the car Edited by 78sport - 19-April-2010 at 1:04PM |

That is definitely NOT how we want to see it end up! I hate demolition derbies - they always claim awesome '70s cars (and now '80s and '90s full-size rear-drivers, too) and reduce their numbers, either for restoration or parts for those who love them enough to preserve them. I think demo derby rules should be written to force people to use front wheel drive imports only!

Yeah well, mine has to go and maybe it will be junked or used for the derby, parish the thought. Nobody has the money to take my car and give it the justice it deserves so......

I started out feeling awful but as time goes on and drastic measures arise, I am feeling less attached to it. I wonder how much I could get for it scrap value(worst case senario)
Most likely I'll sell it at the local ford show/swap meet or the "vintage snowmobile/other items" swap in the fall. I still say I'll feel so relieved if it goes to the right person to save it.

I still love those hubcaps and I'll be sad to see them go when I get the other CVPI wheels to change over to 16's. But it's kind of necessary to keep the ease of finding tires.

Nice car! These things are such good deals, I wish I had a huge garage that I could just keep filling up with unwanted LTD IIs and Cougars. They deserve so much more love than they get!

Sure, they make the size. They make them in BFGoodrich and Firestone and they're all white letters. They make them for pickup trucks with knobby off-road tread and have outlined or all white letters. I don't want that kind of tire. I want a passenger car touring tire. So moving to 225/60R16 is the logical step, since that tire size is currently as popular as HR78-14 was thirty years ago. In thirty more years I may find myself moving to something entirely different, like 225/50R18's on Charger steel wheels or something. Hankook, Goodyear, and Yokohama make those already, among many other brands, it's evidently OEM for Infiniti G35/G37 and the newest generation of Chevy Malibus. That and I like the CVPI wheel look, too, just not as much as the LTD II hubcaps. There are NO good 16-inch full hubcaps out there that would look good on the Torino. Maybe 15-inch hubcaps, but then I'd have to soldier on finding good 15-inch tires which are disappearing fast as well. Even lowly base model Cobalts and Focuses ride on 16-inch tires these days. |

Mount the white letters inside?
Or these. Idk, If you want to change them anyway, go for it, but... you shouldn't HAVE to.

Psquare, what was the original tire size (converted to new numbers) for out Cougars? Is it 225/75R15 or 225/70R15?

Not sure, but 225 75 15 'looks' right. That's what I put on my gray car. I think stock was HR78-15. Closest I've seen is a 225 75 15. It fits the OEM rim just like the OEM tires did.

Psquare75, That link shows the Laramie 225/75/14 as being discontinued. And it's best UTQG number was 500. I want to be able to run good quality long lasting quiet riding tires. And sadly, 14-inch tires no longer fall into that category from any brand at any price point.
Kumho just introduced the eco Solus HM KR22, low rolling resistance, 800 UTQG rating, at $86 on the 'Rack. Looking good to me but I'll wait until a few dozen reviews/surveys show up positive before I commit. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=eco+Solus+HM+KR22&partnum=26TR6KR22&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes |

On this page you can find a calculator for alphanumeric tire sizes. You have to scroll down to middle of the page.

wider tires in the back, with better back space, big meat tires btw, like 275/60, raise up the rear, and it will be a bad ass car

Nice car, and a good find on a hole-in-the-wall dealership lot!
Personally, I'd resist the urge to jack up the back and do the old school hot rod thing; I still think that looks a little too "early '80s teenager hot-rod", but to each his own

just throw your rims/tires on it and see where it sits. Air shocks are not a good long term fix. |

oh yea. I will do the wheels tires first. Looks like these cars have a bigger wheelwell than my 73 did. the 73 would rub occasionaly and i had 2 inch spacers in the back. air shocks will only be if it rubs

I went to get that LTD today, 4.5 hour drive to the top of Illinois. car was ok. 58k original miles, No rust, 351W not 351m as ad states so that was a bonus. BUT steering rag joint was gone completely, and no way i was driving that beast back through snow, slush and chicago traffic with two foot of slop in the steering. I didnt have time to change it myself-(my mom is in the hospital) and i had to get back by 5pm. SOOO.. i was going to walk away from it, but at the last moment they offered to have it fixed and deliver the car to me in Mich. this tuesday. so i bought it, i just dont have it yet:(
