Hello Im working on my ac on my 1973 gran torino 4 door with a 302.  The ac clutch actuator isnt getting a signal for some reason.  The wire looks good.  When I connect a 12v+ wire to it it actuates and seems to work fine.  For some reason when I turn on the ac it doesnt turn on the clutch.  Someone help.  Thanks Jon

Sounds like a low charge to to me, or a bad pressure switch.

Is there a pressure switch on that car?  the wire for the compressor goes into the firewall into the cabin.  I cant figure where is goes from there?  I just changed to a 134a system.  The whole ac system works great when I connect a jumper from the compressor to the + battery term.

Ford didn't use low pressure switches in 73. You might check out your vaccum mode switch in the dash, could be the micro-switch on there that is bad.

Low pressure switch was just the first thing that came to mind,  been many years (20+)since I've worked on any ac systems. So what causes the compressor to cycle if theres no switch? looks like it's time for me to start refreshing myselfe on ac sytems.

Kind of complex but Ford had a thermostatic device on the expansion valve and a suction throttle valve to keep the unit from freezing up. So the compressor would cycle on or off . The vaccum mode switch is located on the left side of the dash, where it says A/C  Heat etc. there are 4 screws that hold it up to the dash panel. You will see all the vaccum hose going to it. Hope this helps you out!  Confused
