Okay, so i took a ride in my buddys mustang and he had a "detroit locker" and i loved the sound it made as he cornered. BUT it looked like it was hard to corner. Any of you guys have one? is it worth it?
Thanks

As cool as "lockers" are, they are not turn friendly. Really good for dropping the hammer in a straight line with a lot of horsepower though. Beating on one around turns takes a different approach than most are used to (and not necessarily safe in traffic).

I have the detroit tru trac that was recommended from several different sources.  So far it works well and once I get the 3" exhaust installed I'll be able to see how well it hold the power of my 460 at the track.

I do, it's an H case NASCAR takeout.
Sounds like a tank making corners "click click click click".. Other than that, in a long wheelbase car like ours, it's not bad at all.  You can, however, really feel it in a gradual bend if you get on the gas, it wants to go straight, like if the brakes were pulling..  If you drive normally, and really only get silly in a straight line, there's no problem at all.  And my car has no sway bars at the moment so it moves around ALOT.   I like knowing that no matter what tires I put on the car, I will have two pushing it when I need it.  The trac locs cannot make that same claim once you get a sticky tire on the car..

Oh yeah, one more thing, every once and a while, if you catch it just right, when you get on the gas it sounds like you broke something important.  I hear that happens when you catch it unlocked and apply power.

Cool! but this is going to be my sons car when he reaches 16! so, i want it to corner pretty good because he has no depth perception. I was looking at the trutrac because it looks like it'll be good in the rain and make the car fly! What do you think of the stock gears? I'll proboly keep them on until hes a little older. Thanks

No problems in the rain, even with drag radials.  The 3500 stall makes most throttle inputs gentle, if you goose it when starting out around a bend, it will lock and it will slide, but you have to try..

That being said, at 16, I'm not so sure I'd have made it unscathed with the way I tended to drive, and that was with a mild 351...

do you have someone that can do the install?  I'd get some REM'd gears from a Nascar shop and a locker from the same, then get it all installed with 31 spl axles from moser or strange..   4spds are especially hard om rear end parts, also think about u-joints....

Is the 31 spline axel the one ford would have used with a factory locking car ? or is it like heavier than what I may have? or more compatible (like 15' wheels) , Install not a problem , I'm not going to beat the snot out of it, but I want it ripe for it .  Nascar shops in Maine ?    I know this is apples and oranges, put a eaton  tru track and 3.25  gears in my chevy a year back has 3 speed auto, going to a 4 speed auto,  maybe that will slow down those 55 MPH RPMs , I'd Like to do this ford once

31 spl axles were truck or big block items generally, I don't know for sure if the 74-76 intermediates ever got them..  I got all my used NASCAR pieces on ebay..

Ok I have a 74 , 460 3.25 locking car, not going to touch it.  The car I'm planning to work on is a 73 Q code , tire fryer , I guess  it would be best to take it apart and count the splines and start there , H case? this refers to the locker it self , not the housing, right ?, you didn't change out the whole thing out, just the  guts, gears, axel , and seals  heavy u's .I've seen N case listing , all I know now  its a 9"  are their any marking to indicate what else it may be? I would think I would be able to get a traction -lok, tru-tracker, or locker that would fit the rear end I have , maybe leave the gearing the way it is 3.50. ,  You got 4.33 backin up your 460 ,  that hole shot car really don't like the highway do it?,  that shaved off a least 2 seconds , that gear was a factory option in 70

I seem to remember that Lincoln Mark IIIs has 31 spline axles, and they interchange into 74-76 housings.

I agree with Jim, the locker takes a little getting use to and can be a hand full in slippery conditions.

A few years ago i was driving the 72 Torino on the street with a mild 460 and minispoll ,no power steering . It was like steering a tank in parking lots. There was no clicking or locking noises just tire hopping or spin when making sharp turns . Parking lots were a breeze the car would easily rear steer if i need to get into a parking stall, just turn the wheel and stomp the gas and it would go into a hole with ease. I diddnt dare stand on it in a corner unless u wanted to get side ways. This was hell on street tires luccky to get 10,000 miles from any tire i put on . But it sure did scoot for a mild street engine 12.98 at 105 mph. I miss that motor. It was mild enough to drive all day in traffic ,but fast enough to take care of most would be challengers. The new motor is just rediculas for street driving. Sometimes more is not better just different.  At 16 i would have killed myself with even the mild 460. Dont even want to think about a teenager driving the car with my current mill!!

Older post, I know.. but same question.. What about the 'truetrac'? I even searched youtube looking for "Detroit Lockers on the street" videos, but I couldn't find any.. just offroading clips.

Here's an oddball idea, anyone ever use ARB air lockers on a fast street car? When they aren't engaged the diff acts as an open diff so no issues cornering etc, when they are engaged with the dedicated on board air compressor it locks up both axles to be true posi traction. They have been used in the offroading world for years and I love them on my jeep. I'm just not sure if there would be a durability issue for racing apps. You build Jeeps for high torque and not so much HP. Jeeps are heavy and use heavy duty differentials for the better builds (Dana 44 or 60s and Ford 9"). I'm just curious if anyone has heard anything about the ARBs in street/track cars.

WOW, thats a pretty good idea. but i cant imagine them being cheap and can you lock the diff when you are moving or do you have to stop the car?

I'm always stopped when I lock mine in the jeep. You just press a button and the compressor kicks on locking the differential in pressing the button again returns the differential to open. The system isn't cheap but it rocks for off road use. It does require a compressor (nothing major, some off road guys have even modified their AC compressors to do double duty).

I haven't seen anyone with them in a hotrod type setup, I just think it'd be interesting to play around with.

Yeah, it does sound cool. but would it be worth it? A lot of guys race their cars and the compressor and all seems like added weight, I think it would be easier to get a trutrak.what do you think of this?

That's pretty much what a ford limited slip/trac loc is,just a different spring setup. The true trac is a nice setup, like a locker, full equal engagement to both wheels without the clunking noise,I've done plenty of them in 5.0 mustangs and they are awesome. My friend in ny runs one in his 10 second stang with no problems. The air locker is tops to,but about $600 price tag.

Okay, how do I tell if my axle is a 28 spline or a 31 spline? I saw that the true trac only accepts 31 splines

Mine has the competition package and 28 spine axles. I managed to snap the right rear one day tooling around over lunch. Could be swapping the 4.11's into it with original axles was asking for it.
