Yesterday I put on a set of OEM door edge guards I had from a car I parted. I also hit the local yard and grabbed a charcoal box setup from a 77 Cougar. I installed it and hooked it up as best I could (The Holley 4150 doesn't have a bowl vent you can attach a fuel bowl vent tube to). Amazingly, even with just the fuel tank vent plumbed into it, along with the air cleaner unit (like OEM), no more gas stink!. I'd stop at stop lights, go to accelerate on a green light, and get an eye watering rush of gas fumes in my face. No more! Cost? $16.

One big issue with this car is the steering is loose.. 160K miles and no real maintenance will do that I guess. The car came with a new steering center link, idler arm and pitman arm in boxes, as well as two ball lower ball joints. I ordered inner and outer tie rod ends and upper ball joints to finish it off.
I talked with the previous owner who said he replaced the shocks about 13 years ago, and used cheap Gabriels. He was on a budget and in a pinch. I looked around at what people were doing for larger cars, so I hit the Crown Vic forum. As much as I love the Bilsteins in my white Cougar, there's no way I'm spending $80 a shock on this car too. CV guys seemed to go between Bilsteins, Edelbrock IAS, and the Motorcraft replacement shock for 79-02 Crown Vic Police Interceptors. a 79-02 uses the same shocks as my Cougar :) (and all the 72-79 intermediates!) Motorcrafts = $32 a piece. Guess which way I went? Should firm the car up a bit. |

Nice, good to see Ford getting good mileage out of a part! My steering's a bit loose, too; I thought it was just a function of it being a '70s car :). Can you post pictures of your suspension rebuild as you go? I'd like to see what's all involved in replacing bushings and the like.

I'm not doing bushings, this car already has polyurethane bushings all around. Just the steering components.

Yay, suspension goodies. Yes I painted it all, totally overkill, but whatever.

Nah, my daily driver is a Chevy Cavalier. This 11 MPG with 93 octane is getting expensive, every day.

Wheel Swap... I got tired of seeing my Cragars and Nittos sitting... So... I'm thinking I LIKE this look, and I'm swapping the springs and wheels back to my white Cougar when the time comes, and calling it a day. BTW TrucK/SUV Mudflaps will cover a 275mm wide tire. :) So what did I put on my White Cougar? |

I dunno, I still really like th work you did on the stock wheels. EVERYBODY seems to do the Cragar 5-spoke look for their hot rods, it's nice to change that up! I still say do body-coloured inserts in the polycast rims, and that'd look slick :).

Meh. I only did the stockies because I had them and needed something, lol. My white car with the 523 spins the 17s all too easy, This car will now be a death trap with these MasterCrap, err, Craft, tires.

That I can appreciate: that's a lot of power for those wheels, let alone the tires on said wheels!
Still, you did a nice job on the stock ones.

Good Things. With the Motorcraft shocks and 17" combo, the car handles AMAZING*. Firm but compliant. I LIKE these shocks.. I may sell my Bilsteins, as they are a little TOO stiff with the 17s.. but perfect with the 15s. Bad Things. Front wheels rub the fender edge on a turn BARELY at the rear lip.. Oh, and since the car is dropped in front, they rub the inner fender on top on a decent bump. ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
