Hello. I acquired a disassembled 75 Torino last December and I've been
putting it together in the last few weeks. It came with power steering,
but I'd rather switch to manual. The problem is there is nothing else
to tighten the fan belt. So I looked on Autozone's website and noticed
they have an idler arm/pulley kit for less than $50. Is this what I'd
need and would it bolt right up? I've mostly worked on newer cars and
I'm used to a serpentine belt.
Also, would I need to swap out the entire steering box or could I just replace the gears or what? I imagine it'll be less than easy to steer like it is. If it's really difficult or expensive, I'll just keep the power steering for now. What do you think? |

Trying to steer a Torino without power assist is going to be brutal! If you really don't want P/S you will have to find a manual box and change everything out. Good luck, not many torinos had Manual steering.

Well looking at the price of new ones, I think I'll just keep the power
steering for now. There are cheaper ways to gain that power.

I lost PS in my ONCE in my 4-door '72, after that I decided to make sure it is full of fluid and check the lines for any trouble. It is just WAY too much work to maneuver that 4000lbs car without it. I would gladly sacrifice the few HP for PS. |

Well I'm sure it is with the power gearbox. I would think it would be a lot easier if converted to manual gears which was my plan. My father had an 82 Cougar which had the power steering hose blow up, so I know how hard it is to steer a car that has power steering but doesn't. But on the other hand, his truck which never had it was a lot easier to steer, at least when moving.
