Yes in between torino's I had a 700hp 1994 Cobra that I had to sell to pay some medical bills for my twin sons.  Then I saw my current torino on ebay for only $3000 and I bought her sight unseen.  Of course she needed lots of work and she was a 4 or 5 year project, but her 460 gave me the same torque characteristics of my former 429 car.

My Story,

When I was 15 I began looking for a ride and I knew three things. One, It had to be a Ford. Two, it was not going to be a mustang. Three, it had to have a 4 speed transmission. Growing up my father oftern talked about his 1964 "K" code 289/271 4 speed Fairlane. With this in mind I really had my eyes and mind set on a 1966-67 Fairlane GT. Though I have never been a fan of the 390 engine, I knew it was a good starting point for a 427 conversion. I scoured every autotrader, classic car, hemmings, and other sale publications that I could get my hands on. I went to see many "restored" or "No-Rust" cars to soon find out that people perception of their vehicles worth or shape is very subjective. Finally one day my dad upon retuning from work asked if I would be interested in going to look at a Torino. I really had never paid much interest to Torinos, but I knew they were big and bulky. I really wanted no part of it. He then mentioned that it was a 4 speed. I found out that a co-worker was selling it. It was mentioned that it could outrun 74-79 Corvetts easily and did it often(Little did I know that a pinto could outrun a 74-79 Vette). I agreed to take a look at the car. Upon arrival I was impressed. It was a 72 Fastback, I had never seent his body style before so I was enjoying the lines and the hood scoop(Hood Scoops are a big plus to a 15 year old). Then the guy cranked it up....chills ran down my spine. The cam was VERY aggressive and it sounded like It was ready for the next Top Fuel event. I was sold right then and there. My father drove it home, as I had never driven a manual trans. I really wish I had been able to drive it through High School, but my father and I tore the front suspension, rear suspension, engine, and transmission out to "fresh'n it up" . Nine( yes 9) years later it still sat in my fathers garage. I put it back together and I still own it today. I have thought about selling it many times when my chips were down, but i keep on holding on to it. It gets compliments everywhere I go and my 5 year old and 2 year old beg to ride in it. I guess I'll keep her.

I bought my 73 GTS from my boss in 78.  I owned it for almost 4 years and had the greatest times with it.  I met my wife when I had it ( see said she dated my for my carConfused).   I sold it for a 57, and she is still with me after 29+ years and the GTS is still on her finger. After a house and 2 kids, I started looking for another project car(Ford).  Living in the northeast, there is not much unless you want to put alot of time and $ into it.  I looked at a few Torinos, in the area, with no luck.  In 2000 I when to have my truck pinstripped, and the guy had this 73 Ranchero for sale.  I never got my truck stripped.

When i was 3, my dad brought home our family car, a 1973 gran torino brougham.  it was about 6 months old. he bought it from 2 guys in louisana.  it was jacked up and had wide tires on the back.  the trunk was full of garbage bags full of soiled work-type clothes.  when cleaning the trunk out, a garbage bag on the bottom contained a whole lot of marijuana.  after turning it over to a police friend, we were told that the two guys were drug runners and bought new cars and sold them often to keep the police from recognizing their vehicles.

that was our family car for 10 years, when i was 13 years old my older sister turned 15 and my parents bought an LTD and gave the torino to my sister.  i was hacked off.  i wanted that car.  she subsequently burned the engine up in it.  she was driving around and when the oil light came on she decided it would be best to drive home, about 10 miles.  my dad bought her a new engine from the parts house and we dropped it in.  she kept it for about 10 years until she finally pulled the engine to put it in a 76 ford truck.  before i realized that she had done it... she sold the body to a junk yard and they crushed it.  i was hacked more...

so when i came to a time in my life where i could, getting settled after college, i started a search for me a torino. it took about 7 years. but i bought my current torino in 2006 and have enjoyed it thoroughly.  i am now rebuilding it (i have posted pictures).

amazingly, we have very few pictures of our old family car... i have a couple and will have to post them later... i cant at work

Bingo!!

It was 1976 watching S&H (before reruns). That was one hot car. I knew I had to have one. I loved those body lines. Just an incredible looking car.  When I was 16, I got a job. Saved my money. And in the summer of 1979, bought my '73 Brougham. I had the coolest car in High School. 1980 Graduate.   Actually, in my senior year, I had a friend who had a '72 the same color as mine and everybody would get us two mixed up. We use to park together and hang out. It was really cool. Two others in High School had 72-73's but totaled them. Mine was eventually totaled a few years later after High School.
I eventually got into the 70-71's and now I have the 73 fastback I'm restoring. Should bring back a few memories.

For me it had nothing to do with TV programs or having one “back in the day” .

As a 15 year old immature Child ( and still too this day ) I was into Rally driving - car racing heavily with Ford MK 1 & 2 Escort’s , Lotus Cortina’s etc . Not sure if you get thous over there but man they can handle when setup correctly ( back then anyway ) Back then we needed a substantial towing vehicle for all and sundry so I purchased a Ford 1973 XA Falcon GT 4 door ( Aussie car and link too one included for you to view below ) with a 351 Cleveland donk she did more than tow our gear she became our “thrash hack” and DAM it could wheel spin on a dime ( had a few more donkeys under the hood than the 4 bangers ) so once I had settled into a V8 there was no looking back . Now driving a work van for most of my life while on the job during weekdays and having a family hack wagon for the missus and three kids ( a Holden Commodore 2003 station wagon V6 ) we needed a weekend warrior to “play” with . The parameters were drawn up as follows – Needs to be V8 , needs to be 2 door , needs to be “sporty” but with room for 5 , needs to be “unique” and not a “belly button” car ( everyone has one ) . The short list came in as follows – an American car possibly something like Dart , Nova , Riviera , Coronet etc ( you get the picture ) I had NO idea the Torino even existed ( yes that is true ) until I found one in New Zealand on a job were I was evicting the tenants from there house and this was the one I brought with the view of rebuilding . Thous of you who have seen my other threads know how bad a condition that girl was in so I imported a complete car in totally virginal condition .

This dashboard just fits me. I can't imagine another vehicle that gives me the feeling a Torino does. A Montego, perhaps. Cougars from 74-76. That's it. There is no other car with these deep set gauges, this downswept steering wheel, the Ford radio face, the AC on the left, and this color of blue. Forget Coke. This car...is it.

In high school everyone seemed to have, or talk about camaro's and mustangs. When I graduated I took my grad money and spent it on a well used '72 Gran Torino. These cars were different from all others and stood out. I couldn't believe they were not more popular than the mustang. So I bought a car that looked worn but ran great. That car has been gone decades. Now, twenty-five years later I still have the bug and recently bought another '72 G. Torino. Love it, Love it.

Back around 73/74.  dad bought a 72 used.  gold with white top, cant remember what color interior.  i was about 7/8 years old or so.  and then of course there was that cool tv show about a couple cops and a suh-wheet red torino with a white strip.  hooked ever since.  72's are my top pick tho and outnum, ber any other year in my ownership history.

My family, dad mostly, always liked strange cars. never a 'normal' car.  all growing up, we had  AMC's. Hornets, concordes, matadors, heck my dad even bought a PACER brand new. mix this in with the toyotas, vw's and international scouts, and we were pretty much a geek family. While all my freinds dads had chevelles and chargers, we had a nissan pickup.

here is an actual photo of our driveway in 1979
then my brother went off to college in 1982, he bought a 72 torino while there, much to my parents dismay.   after college, he bought new mustang GT, and in 1985, he gave me his torino.
like mike says: hooked for life.

ok long story short back in the early 80's I worked at a bodyshop as a painter and we had a wrecked 72 GTS come in and after finding a front clip the owner decided to do a color change from red to a nice medium blue metallic,so all bodywork was performed and I sanded the car and prepped it for paint.the complete car was painted bc/cc including jambs & underhood and trunk. After painting I sanded and polished the clear to a mirror finish. The car was a 351C 4v 4 spd most likely a Q code but I didn't know much about them back then, alls I knew it looked kewl and was fast.A few years later after moving to NJ with a 72 Gran Torino wagon my grandfather gave me that I restored the body on.I eventually found a 73 plain jane Torino which I installed a 74 front clip and doors from my uncles Ranchero.it was my first hotrod project and even though I wanted a Sportroof it was a Torino. After moving back to Florida I installed the 351Cfrom the Ranchero with some upgrades.I scraped the body in 1993 and kept the motor

Now after all these years holding onto the engine I wanted something kewl to put it in so 2004 I got a 70 Mustang Sportroof 302 car that had decent sheetmetal but the bottom was rotted but great project for ProStreet.I had my own restoration shop at the time and the car just sat and I needed some cash to keep the biz afloat so I sold the Mustang.Flash forward 2009 after closing my biz in 2007 I went back into collision work but dable in classic cars on the side and wanted my own car again so started to search, know 70 Sportroof Mustangs werecat a premium I thought why not look at another Torino,so I searched ebay and found a 73 formal roof in ruff shape but cheap enough to buy,so I bought that and then found this forum and after a few months here learned a member was selling his 73 GTS project which I bought the rolling chassis, cause I always wanted a Sportroof ever since I painted that 72 GTS back in the 80's so after 25 years i'll finally have one

one of my co-workers had seen the movie Gran Torino. i hadnt seen the movie so i based my decision on what the car was, not popularity. so we were pokin around on CL and we ran across a 72 gran torino with a 400. since i was thinking of buying a project car @ the time i looked into this car. i looked into what it came with from the factory and couldnt resist @ that time. so now here i sit with one of my greatest challenges. not so much a challenge but a labor of love.

My first car was  a 65 Mustang Convertible.  I was 15 and a instant Ford nut.   Restored it when Mustangs weren't popular.  Everyone thought I was crazy.   I bought a $400 Cuda to drive while I fixed up my Stang.    I was in a minority surrounded by Chevy buddies...I was the only Ford/Mopar guy.   When I raced them in my Cuda and Stang they quickly quieted...and gave a nod.

I sold everything to pay for college.   I later found my old Stang from the person I sold it to and bought it back about 10 years later.   The previous owner did not take care of it and required fixing up.   I started to repair it and quickly ran out of cash...wife and kids were a priority.   I sold it again.  This time I'm glad I sold it to a Father and son who restored it to show winning collector.

Since then I've been searching for another, not so popular, cool ass car.   I've always loved the Torino and the Aussie Falcon.   My search continued for years....until I found a rust free super clean  73 GTS.   Although I was searching for a 4 speed big block 72...I'm completely content with this 73 GTS.   I love it and will not let it go...over time it will be Street bruiser able to hang with the track corner carvers.    I look at this as a challenge to show what these cars can achieve.    They are truly an unrecognized Muscle car with excellent engineering behind their design.

My first car was a '71 Mustang with a 302...I was 13 when S&H show came out and thought that was one cool car....When I was 17, I bought a "69 Dodge Charger and made a General Lee clone, at the same time, my younger brother built a S&H Torino clone. It was really funny having both cars in the driveway at home.. People called it "the house with the Cars of the Stars"..My brother sold his Torino when he went into the military and I sold the General to pay for college..I always wanted a striped Tomato of my own someday but felt if I was going to put money into a restro I wanted to put it into a Limited Edition S&H Torino...Finally got my wish 3yrs ago and will hopefully have it on the road this summer....
