I don't know a lot about '72 Torinos, so I need the experts to clear this up: of the many I've seen on the Internet and this forum, most seem to have a grey grille cross-hatching, while others seem to have it in black. Was either available, or is the black done aftermarket? Was the black only available on the GTS?

Thanks for any clarification!

do you mean ALL the cross hatchign or just in the squeares?  if in the squares, then yes it is factory.  and actually its not black, its a dark argent or charcoal.  the original grill in what used ot be my 72 is like this.  and you can tell its a factory job and not a garage job.

From what I have observed, the Gran Torino had a solid color for the entire grille while the Gran Torino Sport had the two tone with the smaller squares having the dark argent/gray and the larger outer squares having a "dull chrome" type finish.

Well, I can tell you from the assortment of GTS cars I have had, plus a couple gran's, there have been variations.
I have 5-6 grilles laying around, and this is another small detail I've been meaning to look over.
