I am trying to determine the date of the big block that I have.   I am pretty sure its a 460.   The valve covers say is a  7.5L.   anyone know when they switched over from listing engine size in CI to L?
I also know its an emission  engine  as it has some emission components,   so that would have to make it a 73 or later engine correct?

They started listing them in metric in the mid 80s but the valve covers can always get switched around.  Check the casting numbers on the heads, they should be right next to the lip of the valve covers cast into the top of where the exhaust manifold would bolt on.

I would recommend a nice candlelit dinner. Don't try your luck until the third date.

Seriously, I believe Ford began calling engines by only their liter number in 1983 when the Thunderbird was redesigned. But I could be, and probably am, wrong.

That looks like an engine from an '87 pickup.  First clue is the emissions decal...at the lower left corner of the decal, you can see its part number...E7AE-9C485-CJC.  The valve covers and intake manifold are painted that drab '80s grey.  And the block has the post-'78 truck block casting number.  You'll probably find a small counterweight right behind the harmonic balancer, as these engines were, for whatever reason, externally balanced.

From what I've read, these blocks are desirable for strokers, as the cylinder is supposed to be a quarter-inch longer than earlier blocks.

Yeah, clear as day: "THIS ENGINE CONFORMS TO US EPA REGULATIONS APPLICABLE TO 1987 MODEL YEAR NEW HEAVY DUTY ENGINES...etcetcetc"

External balance like Pat said. Could be a real beast in there waiting to be awakened...
