After changing the filter and fluid in my C4, I used up most of my old stock of Type F transmission fluid. After checking my local parts stores, it has become apparent that Type F is not readily available. So, who makes Type F and what does everybody else use?

Castrol makes it. You can usually find it at Advance Auto Parts. That's what I run in my C4.

The last bottle of Type F I bought came from Wal-Mart, SuperTech brand, and it is plain Type F. I think they are phasing it out and trying to get people to use the "universal" fluids they have now. They aren't, and I won't, but I'll drive around to stores out in the sticks and buy up old stock when I have the cash to do it.
I haven't had to do a thing to this transmission. It was full and pink when I got it. It's full and pink now. I only bought that bottle of Type F ATF to top off the power steering. |

up here, there is a place called Salvo auto parts that carries a lot of the off brands. Also, Advanced auto parts and I want to say Autozone carry it. I wonder why the power steering runs on transmission fluid? Makes you think.

Why not? All it's made to be is hydraulic fluid with detergents. |

Heck, alot of screw drive air compressors run trans fluid for oil. Used many a gallon when I was a compressor tech.

When I was in high school the PS pump on my '75 sedan made all sorts of racket. I discovered there was regular generic PS fluid in there. I sucked out all I could siphoning it. Topped off with Type F. Quieted WAY down but was still groaning a bit under load. Still blew the pump later (and fogged up a good portion of I-35E near Corinth, causing road rage from an off-duty cop) and had to change it and the high pressure hose. But when I put the new pump in it got ALL Type F. Didn't have a problem after that.
The Type F fluid is a fairly thick hydraulic fluid. Type A is thinner, and Dexron is in between I think. When the PS rack in my Aerostar leaked I cheapened myself and bought Type A from dollar stores. It leaked out slower and it ran quieter than Type F or regular PS fluid. Who knew? You'd think the thick Type F would leak out slower? Maybe Type A is thicker? I think it's for OLD cars like Powerglides and 50s-60s Hydra-matics. |

Here is a link to an interesting (albeit brief) discussion about ATF.

If you have an O'Reilly's near you, they have a crap load. That is where I by mine, they even sell it by the gallon I believe. Not sure of an actual manu but they do have their own they sell. Hope that helps!

Interesting article but I am confused (or old age is affecting my memory).
Turning a wrench in the early 70's including a transmission shop, I cannot recall ever hearing of CV tranny fluid. In the article it indicates this a special C6 fluid but I clearly recall even on Ford Police cars that we used Type F.
Does anyone here even know if CV is still available or even needed?

I found any gas stations around here no longer have type F!
No way in hell will I mix the new age with type F. I like my older fords. Type F for Power steering. Type F for the transmission. I know the newer stuff uses like the mercon/dextron2-3 oils, but I have resorted to just carrying type F in my '79 F150 because anymore, the thing leaks bad. Trying to hold off, because it's not going to be a gasket job, it'll be a pull the front clip and the entire drivetrain type of event. |

I bought some at a walmart after said wild goose chase with 5 gas stations not having type F. Funny, in rural places, I can find type F in gas stations. Probably because of all the old Fords still living in the sticks around here.
