Forgot to say Its out of police car 86 stang. Regular 86 had 85 mph speedo. Still easier to find than 140 torino police speedo.

Does the speedo connect directly to the factory 72 cable?  Is the cable for a C4 and a C6 going to be the same?  How about speedo calibration for different size tires and/or gear ratios?

I would think the speedo calibration is typical of all mech Ford gauges?

RockAuto shows the cable end the same as 70's Fords.

Yes the 72 cable will work. C4 and c6 is the same. You would change the gear on the trans end of the cable to match rear end tires or gear changes.

I know about changing the gear on the trans end of the cable, but is there a gear that would support that 140 speedo with something like a 2.75 or 3.00 gear that would be somewhat common in the 70's cars?

If your speedo is accurate it will still be accurate if you swap to the 140. 2.75 and 3.00 were common in torinos so the correct gear should be easy to find

Carl, I think all domestic fords with mech speedos utilize the same internal reduction. 6000 revs to 1 mile or something like that.

Now that I think about it, my factory speedo goes to 120.  Hopefully it'll wrap around without breaking when I take it to 140. Confused

Question?
Was the 140mph speedo available as an option on 72 Q codes with sport cluster?
I came across on at a car show a few weeks ago and had not seen this before. Possible the same retro????

Not a sport cluster. If it had 140mph, it would have most likey been a retrofit.
There was a black 1972 GTS that came from Oregon and ended up here in Nebraska, beautiful car.
Had a 514 and 5 speed tremec trans, and some serious love put into the body.

Nice detail on the swap.

pretty sure there's another option, http://www.whitegauges.net/ shows a 160mph face in the 2nd frame here, http://whitegauges.net/products/1972%252d1973-Ford-Ranchero-GT-Torino-White-Face-Gauges.html
click on 'see more pics' and go to the 2nd pic. they say they can recalibrate speedos and produce overlays for applications not listed, so it sounds like they can handle the whole deal

Yes they can (whitegauges), and I have both the 160 speedo and the 8000 rpm tach faces and they recalibrated my speedo.. Not a bad job from what I've been able to tell, though my GR is substantialy different from stock..

They recalibrated the tach for 8k operation?

Man, this is exactly what I'd like to have on the car - 160mph speedo and 8k tach.  I tried calling them but I could never get an answer on the phone.

Works for me.

I'm seeing the police package SSP Mustang speedometers go to 140mph from 1982 to 1986 as well. The 1982 model is pretty rare, it's mostly white and the km/h markings are green. It also has a 6000rpm tach with no redline. Those two would look nice. I'm thinking this:

Take the speedometer and tach from the Mustang cluster. Put them in place of the fuel gauge and speedo in my base cluster. Wire up the tach and speedo manually. Then put a quad gauge (AutoMeter Designer Black II) in the right pod, and nothing on the far right (yet...plan to put a big fat vacuum gauge there...) At this point I'd have to wire everything up manually since the printed circuit no longer applies, and I may need a different fuel sending unit depending on what AutoMeter has available. Might look nice when I'm done. I'll build it out of that '73 Montego cluster if it's still there for me to pull up at UPI/PnP. If not I should be able to find a standard cluster cheap somewhere. So I tried to make a picture of what this would look like...

Thats cool!
Maybe 2 quad pods?
could put other gauges in the pod.
Oil Temp, A/F ratio, Vauum, maybe tranny Temp.
Could move the gages around in the 8 holes as you want for your location taste.

Whitegauges can do the tach but it was $$$$ so I only had the speedo done.  I was going to go with redline or another (when funds allowed) who can use the guts from a newer tach 8000 rpm tach with the old face and needle..  (or try to do it myself and save the $$$)..  Gauges just got back burnered by "life"
Email was always more reliable with them.
