So the new setup is in.

So.. the new one is in.
POR15 on the axle tube and control arms. Energy Suspension rear control arm bushings.

I had to change the *!&$^ yoke on the center section, to use the old one from the Cougar.

Ford Explorer rear discs, using the Explorer rear cables
Bilstein HD Crown Vic shocks, for a cop car..

I'm still on the original springs, since I dont want to alter ride height until I have the big block in... and I'm leaving the rear sway bar off for now. I can go with the original 1/2" or an adapted front, used in the rear, 7/8" bar.. or, try a 1" bar from a larger Lincoln..

I want a base line for now.

Just need to swap the master cylinder/proportioning valve.

I bought this stuff on eBay a few years ago for $200. calipers are $50, rotors are $60.. and it's a literal bolt on.. the ebrake cables work with almost no effort.

Actually I'm having trouble with them..

On the dyno, I couldn't even stop the rear wheels to stop the drum. I need to work with them this winter.

I was hell bent on putting disc brakes in my rear but some one told me for my car the stock ones would be great with a modern valve system.  Can anyone tell me treyre opinoinon this subject.

Steve-
I don't know off hand, have not looked into the subject.
I still am kicking around with 10x2" drums out back on my torino, but have 1976 11x3 drums that are going on over this winter...everyone wants rear disc, but I personally don't want to mess with them.

I never have checked with Paul on the back brakes, I know he was having some issues like not even being able to lock them up on hard stops.

I read in december car craft about a guy with the exact opposite problems:
He had a '69 camaro that was having issues of the rear explorer brakes have issues locking up before the fronts; later he had to pull everything and go to an aftermarket kit.  Come to find out due the size of the caliper piston, it was clamping down much too quickly.
The guy had selected the wrong proportioning valve and line size for the explorer stuff, and the line pressure and fluid volume was causing some issues.
For the ease, if you want a rear disc setup, it can be done...but for someone like me...drums work fine as long as they are freshened up and properly working.
My 2 cents.

dumb question...

why not just get the rear disc set up from the Lincoln Versailles (Ford Granada) it had the same 9 inch. Probably able to just swap out the entire rear end.?

Versaillies use a leaf sprung rear axle, totally different. The bolt pattern for the backing plates is different, and the parts are very rare and expensive, so unless you have a complete rear, you're pretty much out of luck.

FWIW, I will be listing all my rear disc components for sale end of winter.. I've purchased everything to get the drums going again.

Tried 3, a 7/8 a 1" and a 1 1/16 (I believe). Explorers use a 1 1/16" (I think).. I forget off hand as I'm at work. I noticed no change with any of the masters on the rear discs.

I tried the original Cougar master, and a 4 wheel disc master from a Lincoln Mark V. Not sure on the diameters.

I just wonder if they have different ratios of when each chamber starts to work based on pedal travel?

Did you try one specifically for an explorer or the Ranger with discs?  I guess my point is that the drum ones have to move just a little fluid to the rear and a bunch to the front.. Wonder if it's a volume issue based on the MC application..

Just a thought since others had the exact opposite problem with the same calipers.

Of course who am I to give brake advise, my 120k mile parts car with brakes of unkonwn age and manufacturer stops better than my race car..

I don't know. I have wondered if Explorers have 'quick take up brake calipers' but I never got an answer anywhere I asked. I have the exact opposite problem of everyone else with these calipers (most seem to have the rear wheels lock instantly).

For $80 I can get the rear drums back on with all new hardware and call it a day.

If you're interested in trying to make my rear disc parts work I am MORE than happy to try and make a deal with you. I've just lost interest in the parts. I can do good body and paint work, and I am the sicko that likes electrical wiring........ but brakes are not my cup of tea at all.

Danny Cabral on the 460 forum with the Bronco tried to help me, but he was left scratching his head, as my setup mimicks his (only difference between the F350 master and a Mark V master is the port outlets and bolt pattern).

The front calipers are the wildcard when comparing the setup to a Bronco.  I wonder what would happen if you switch the brake lnes port to port.  Just to see if the rears work better that way (probably not safe to drive much that way though.. )

Just a thought.  I'd rather see you get yours working and buy my own than see you sell short and end up doing the same later myself.

http://www.ssbrakes.com/products/detail/733/?make=Ford&model=8%26quot%3B+%26amp%3B+9%26quot%3B+Rear+Ends&year=

Stainless Steel Brakes makes a rear disc kit for the Torino bearing 9 inch axle. Includes parking brake cables.

Of course, you are still on your own for proportioning valve, which seems to be 95% of the problems experienced with the rear discs (my assumption based on reading everything on the forum the last couple years).

So a better brake kit like this may only exagerrate Paul's problem by having faster, harder reaction during brake application.

I hear of 11x3 brakes being mentioned a couple of times. I am aware of the 10x3 police, and the 11x2.5 (or 2.25 I can't remember) used on Elite and other large applications.

Where does the 11x3 drum come from? What, if anything, is required to install it?

11x3 is a great deal of braking area! That would probably provide as much braking as discs (explorer size rear), however it would still have fade. Good option though...

My problem would be solved with harder and faster brakes.

Biggest I've seen on Rock Auto in the 5x 4.5" pattern is the 11 x 2.5" drums on the Elite/Torino... that's what I'm putting back.

You'd need shoes, the longer shoe pins, and drums to install.

I'm not autocrossing my car, and even if I take it to the track.. 1 hard stop and then 2 hours of cool down (about how long it is between runs at NED) will be fine.

I feel like a ricer but the only reason I put the discs was because the drums look dinky behind the big wheels.  Ermm

I won't call you a ricer until I see the bazooka tail pipe and a primered aluminum wing that doesn't match the rest of the car.

Seriously though, I am under the same impression as you.

There was a 10x2.5 (standard), a 10x3 (police), and 11x2.25 (Elite/tow/etc) and I heard of, but have never looked into a 11x2.5.

I am also aware of the 11x2.5 on full-size, but as you mention Paul it is not 5x4.5 pattern.

I would think that the 11x2.5 is the best bet of all the choices. I think the 10x3 was used to accomodate 14 inch wheels.

The area of the 10x3 would 94.2 square inches, while the area of the 11x2.5 would be 86.4 square inches.

Compared to the 10x2.5 at 78.5 square unches, they are both still bigger. I would think that a larger diameter drum would perform better. I don't know that for a fact however, I am only making a guess.

Anyone know the answer to that?

My Elite and Cougar both had the 11 x 2.5" drum brakes. Honestly, they could rip me through the seatbelt combined with a good front setup. I can only imagine how it'll be with the larger front rotors I have.

What MC did Danny use with his setup?

I read through that article. Certainly well researched and well written, I had a couple comments/notes:

1.  The mention of the same disc brake pads for front calipers is interesting with the later note about "performance" disc brake pads being available.

2.  He hates drum brakes with a passion.

3.  He apparantly had no problems with his rear discs, and yet he only gutted out a factory proportioning valve.

The more I think about the drum brake options, the more I keep coming back to the 10x3 brake. The braking surface is larger, and if it is a finned drum (I assume it is), it would make sense that the best rear braking would be had from that.

The more I plann on upgrading the more I find out from the forum how good the ford , mercury people put things together back then.  I will see what size the drumms are and upgrade to a police setup , and restore or replace the front disc to the original. Im assuming this will give me balanced braking. I dont want to pull off center when I learn how to slow down. Yeah I said learn!!!  I never learned how to slow my 72 fastback down the rite way **^#!! . But then again the dukes of hazard were a bad influence on driving skills back then.

I am trying to remember the results of a Rear Disc install on a Ranchero.

There was that book that was published about 10 years ago, by a mechanic named Mark. It was titled the "Torino Ranchero handling manual" or something like that.

Anyway, he made several suspension enhancements and also put on rear discs. The brakes were either Explorer type or a 70's Lincoln type, I can't remember which.

Anyway, his report on the brake performance after adding rear discs was "little improvement to braking".

Interesting to note. And I think he added an adjustable proportioning valve.

I have the book in question. He used CV calipers (same as explorer for all intents and purposes). He also used the CV prop valve and master as well I believe.

So the bronco setup was a 78-79 F350 MC and 9 1/4" dual diaphram booster with a pedal ratio of 3.41:1.  How did your closest setup compare?

Jim.. Lincoln Mark V master cylinder 1 1/8" bore , the dual diaphragm booster from a Ranchero (9.xx", I forget). No idea on the pedal ratio. I've tried a 7/8" and 1" master, and I actually didn't really notice a difference with any of them.

I'm going to include the Mark V master and the modified prop valve with the auction/sale as well, as I'm just going to go back to what my Cougar had originally. I've started piecing together a drum setup.

FWIW, Danny said that his rears were very difficult to lock up as well, as I quizzed him a few times.. We couldn't figure out the problem.

Very interesting..  I wonder what would have happened if you had put an adjustable prop valve on the front and reduced pressure there?  Or, is it just possible that the Explorer rears just don't have enough oomph for decent sized tires on a heavy car?
