Sorry this is long - Hey guys, this is my first post here...and before I go any further I just wanna say that since this is one of the few forums I found that had more of a focus on "vintage" Fords/Mercurys, I thought this would be a better place to post this question, instead of a forum where I say "carburetor" and no one knows what that means haha.

1974 Mercyrt Montego MX Brougham 4-Dr,

64,000 original miles, it runs REALLY good, nice and strong (everyone can tell a worn motor from a strong one) It has the ** slightest ** tick what so ever, BARELY noticeable. The car was not used that much, and we did some work to get it road-worthy again. It was gonna be scrapped and there was no way I was going to let that happen. Like I said, it is totally roadworthy now and we use it almost everyday.

The question - we changed the oil a few times of course, each time using 4 quarts of 10W-30 and 1 quart of Lucas Oil Stabilizer - the thick stuff. So, now we are actually going to drive it a lot... do 351's like "thicker mixtures" or should we have tried/used 4 quarts of 10W30 and 1 quart of Marvel Mystery Oil? We used the Lucas first out of fear that the the oil would be too thin...now we are in Illinois and it is COLD out...so some people are telling us 10W-30 and Lucas is too thick and can actually damage the engine. We have a Caddy with the 425 Big Block and the 10-30 and Lucas actually makes that tick MORE. The Marvel quiets that down. So, if any of you guys have a 351W from the 70's - what oil/mixture do you use?
We also have a 1975 Marquis with a 400, and we run 10W-40 with No additives and it is fine...right now I'm leaning more toward the Marvel.
Thanks for the input !

Hi. Welcome!. I run 15w50 year round in my 77 Cougar and have no issues. Higher the number, thicker the oil. I don't run any additives, but I do run Mobil 1 synth.

10W30 is what I plan to run in the 351CJ. MMO as needed.

I ran straight SAE 40 in the 351M and occasional use of Valvoline VR-1 SAE 50. Tried MMO, no change. It burned too much oil to allow anything to "work" at all.

I think 10W30 and MMO would be appropriate.

edit: new member...with a 4-door Montego...and therefore...

I am running 10w30 in my 351C. Occupant ( Allen??) Is the engine a CJ or a 2v? I thought you said it had the 2v heads on it, or did somebody swap them out? Just trying to keep up with the timesLOL.

It's Alan, yes, and the engine is a 4-bolt, CJ, D2AE-CA, and the heads are 2V heads, have the 2 up in the corner, the guy said they came off a '74 2V Cleveland. That's actually the setup I'd prefer.

Summertime I might run 10W40, depends on how much I get to drive it and certainly to make the run to the show in TN in September. Prolonged highway speeds and all, definitely want the heavier oil for that.

10W30 or 40 NO ISSUES!

10/30 with lucas should be no issue either.
I ran 20W50 in a car year round with no issue in New England.

Valvoline DuraBlend or Valvoline Full Synthetic have never let me down.

I would say... STAY AWAY from Marvel for everyday use.
No need to thin anything out daily.

Thanks guys, OK I think the final choice was run MM and 10W-30 for a while, then just switch to 10W-40.  A "while" could be a while though because unfortunately I never have that far to go...and I use the car to go to work and school, both which are too freakin' close...so hopefully this weekend I can take it out on the highway!Smile

Honestly, I've never owned a Montego or anything of that body style before and I really love it so far!  Since you want pictures....here they are!  And, for the hell of it, here are the other vehicles in the fleet for you guys to enjoy:  (can you tell my family likes big cars haha)

The Montego:

1977 Ford LTD Wagon:  unfortunately the 400 blew up at 260,000+ miles, always started though!

1975 Mercury Marquis with trippy interior:

1978 Mercury Marquis - someone had fun with this, used every day until last year:

1973 Lincoln Town Car, but the car needed to much work on little parts. i.e. hard-to-find stuff so unfortunately I had to sell it:  Don't mind the '77 Chevy, that was owned for only a month or so

The Montego looks good so nice save from scrapyard. Nice collection of cars. Looks like the stuff I'd like to own.
