OK. I have gotten my new Cragar S/S's. They are 15x8's. Now comes the tires and heres where I thought you all might give me some ideas. From looking thru old post's it seems a lot of folks are running 235/60/15 on the front. I think thats what I will go with but my question is on the rear. I am thinking of either 255/60/15 or 275/60/15. The chart shows that the 275 is about 2 inches taller than the 235's I will put on the front and that would give a nice little rake on the rear but my goal is to find a tire that doesnt look like a truck tire on the rear. So what do all of you think. 235/60/15 on the front and what on the back 255 or 275? Any ideas are helpful. Thanks Greg

275/60's. if you get the 255's, they won't look very wide in the back of the car. I had 275/60, then bought some 295/60, and i thought the sidewall was way too tall, but i liked the wideness of the tire.

* 2.. I had 255 60 15 on 15x7s.. on 8s, they'll look odd compared to your fronts.

The chart says a 255/60/15 can be mounted on rims from 6 to 9 inches wide. Why would they look odd on 8's? The idea of running the same width rim on all four corners seems to be a common practice. Just different tires sizes front and back. I was just trying to figure out if I wanted 255 or 275 on the rear. From what I can see 255 are about 27 inches tall and the 275 are about 28. The 275 is almost a inch wider.

Right, the 275 is an inch wider. that inch will make the sidewall bulge differently than the front. I think it'll be noticeable. If it were me, I'd have picked the tire size I want, and then change rim widths so they'd have the same sidewall.

I've seen a 225 70 on a 9" rim. it looked like an inner tube, totally round.

I think you may have that problem to a lesser extent if you run 235s on a 15x8. To be honest, this is the first I've ever heard of running different tire sizes on the same rim.

On my Cougar, I run a 17 x 8 and a 17 x 9. the front is a 255 50 and the rear is a 275 50. The sidewalls, and tires, look identical, appearance wise,  and not out of place.

IMHO it might look goofy.  Run a 15x7 up front if you want the 235. I'd just do what I did on my Elite, 255 60 15s all around.

also, play with this. It won't show what the tire physically will shape like, but it'll give a size comparison

My car has 245/60 R14 tires on it right now.  These are on some really beat up Cragar knock offs.  I'm looking to run the new American Racing version of the Ansen Sprint.  I'm probably going to go with the 17x8 size.  As far as a tire, I think that a Torino needs some sidewall to really look right.  That means I can either go with a 245/45R17 and look 'wrong' or a 255/50R17 and look right, but be about 5% off on my speedometer.

Well, I'm going to be off on the speedometer and go for looks.  I'm pretty sure I can find the right speedo gear to make that all happy again.

I run a 255 50 17 in front on my 78 Cougar (same frame as the Torino)... even *that* looks kinda small.

Psquare, Are those 255 60 15's mounted on 15X7 rims in the photo?

I am also at present trying to decide on a tire change. I have 15X7 rims on the car now, and I'm considering going with 15X8 rims, and tire choice is puzzling me.  Due to money restrictions, I might try upsizing my 235 60 15 tires.  There are so many options...

Yes, those are 255 60 15 on the Elite, all four corners. No rubbing or anything, for what it's worth, lol.

What brand of tire are you using? Wouldn't they be kind of tall? Just like to know thanks. Gary

I am liking the 17x8 with 255/60/R17 all the way around. That is sounding like an excellent option.

I recently looked into 16's for wheel diameters, but 16's are not very popular, 17 or 15 seems to be a more industry standar way to go.

Just be aware that the 255 50 is smaller than what the torino came with.. At least they were smaller than what my cougar came with.

Well actually I was planning on a 40 series tire for my car. i like the wider lower profile don't want to be taller than 26.5 " . Guess I have to do some more homework.

This raises an interesting point.  My car has 245/60-r14's on some Cragar-like rims all around, which it had when I got it.  I've been roughly using that as a target for tire roll-out for the new tire/wheel combo.  The truth is, though, I've got no clue what my car came with from the factory.

Any ideas what a '72 wagon rolled out of the factory with?  I'm sure it'll be the old style tire designation.  What tire diameter or rotations per mile should I shoot for?

Well.. for comparison.. my Cougar came with 225 70 14s. Diameter of 27.4".. the 275 50 17 (which is in bacK) has a dia. of 27.8. I actually GAINED a bit.

TO compare, you have 245 60 14s.. which has a diameter of 25.6.

You can see why it might look a little goofy.

Some people LIKE the smaller rubberband sidewalls, like on the ricer cars.. but I personally like to use the factory diameter, stick with that, and find wheels that'll fit within that given measurement. 18s on 40s.. 17s on 50s.. etc.

Hope that helps? :-D

Just for the record I took one of my 275/40-17 tire and wheel off of my Cobra and put it on the Torino and it just didn't look right. Looked wimpy on the Torino and that is with a 9" wide wheel! Taller tire looks better.

It's funny with these cars, but to me, they just gotta have some sidewall on the tire to look right.  The rubber band thing just doesn't do it for me.  Not to mention, the ride goes to hell with those types of tires.

The tire size on my Torino doesn't look completely weird.  The wheels, though, just look tiny on that big old car.  So if I go with bigger wheels (the new A.R. Ansen Sprint) but I want to keep the sidewall, I'm just going to end up with a bigger wheel.

I guess the next thing I need to look for is a different speedo gear so I don't get stopped for speeding all the time.  Any ideas?

Your car likely came with a 26.5 or 27" tall tire from the factory, so the smaller tires you have now have your speedo artificially high..  (as long asd you have the factory trans and rear gears still in the car)..

For the speedo question, we'd really need to know how accurate it is now to tell you what woudl happen with a change..
