I am thinking about replacing the Points and condenser in my 72 GTS-400 engine with a Pertronix Igniter module. I already have installed an MSD-5 box, MSD Blaster coil and 8mm plug wires. Any thoughts and comments will be appreciated. Thanks.   John M.

Broom that stock distributor and get an MSD Billet, it's money well spent. http://www.msdignition.com/dist_17.htm

Yep! Forget Petronix....been there, done that, wasted the money and finally switched to a true Electronic distrib. Trust me, it's worth the extra money to get the real deal!

that distributor says it only works with MSD series 6,7,8 and 10 modules and he states that he has a 5 series...what kind of difference would that make?

I sent an e-mail to the MSD support site last night with all of the info. I'm curious as to what they will say.   JM

Just heard back from MSD. They say the -5 box will NOT work with the Ignition Module. I need a -6A or better.  JM

I noticed some earlier posts that were a little against the MSD control boxes being unreliable, etc.

Could anyone expand on that? I would have thought that a properly installed box would be more relaible than a factory system.

I also remember my 79 Cadillac with that HEI ignition and the control module inside the distributor - that thing literally left we stranded 3 times alone... I carried spare ignition control modules for the damn thing. Hated it, but I was good at replacing it in the field after a while.

The MSD-5 Ign. box I have on my GTS was purchased in 1995 and installed on my 1957 Chevy until I sold it in 2000 and was then installed on my GTS. 11 years seems pretty reliable to me. Maybe the newer or more powerful MSD boxes have problems but I swear by mine!    John M.

I have never had a problem with MSD products either. Although i have a Duraspark II on my 73 since 1987 and have only replaced one box. Car starts first time every time. Gary
