I had a terrible time trying to get my street tires to bite off the line last Friday night at the drags. I've decided to drop some green on a new set of cheater slicks. Has anybody had good success with a particular brand of cheater slick that hooks hard off the line and has lasted through many burn outs, or even a race season? Also, what kind of 60 ft. times are you clocking?

If you're looking for a street legal radial tire, the Mickey Thompson Drag Radial is supposedly the stickiest, the 275/60/15 will give you some sidewall to cushion the launch.  I'm running old BFG Drag Radials and getting 1.69 60's with rather high rear gears..  The other options (bias ply) are the M&H Racemaster or Hoosier Quicktime Pro, I've seen both used pretty well at the track.  There are a couple cars here with better times than mine, so I hope they'll chime in..

The Mickey Thompson ET Drag Radial looks pretty good. If you were going to buy a new set of MT ET's, which size would you pick? Staying within the confines of the stock Torino wheel well.

255/60's would fit easily, 275/60s fit with some attention to backspacing (that's what I'm running, and on standard spec rims, I had to trim the fender lips just a tad)  If you don't want the tall rear tires, they you can go for the 275/50's at about 26" tall..

Just some thoughts.  What is your combo again?

I have a 72 GTS with an EFI 472, CJ Alum Heads, 292 Comp Cam, Hooker Headers, C6 with SVO 1st & 2nd gears, 9" Rear 4.11's. Stock suspension and 4,140 pounds with me in the car. My best 1/4 mile was 12.293/110.38 mph with a 1.770/60 ft. on 26" M/T slicks which I sold. Since then I replaced my Torker II manifold for a Victor Jr. and now my throttle response is unbelievable, hence the spinning problem off the line with my 275/60/15 street tires. I'm going to look into those 255/50/15 tires to see if they'll work with my Center Line Rims. Thanks for the information.

the 275/60/15 DR's might be a better choice if you already have 275/60's on the car.  (the 255/60's may seem a little thin, and if you are pulling 1.7 60' times, you need some tire width, my best so far is like 1.69, but my suspension is about as far from tuned as it gets)

With the low 1st and the 4.11's, I don't think you need a short tire in the back anyway, the 26" tall slicks may have been costing you a MPH or two depending on your power peak and if the CJ heads have been ported at all..

Hey Jim, I think your right about my old slicks causing my MPH numbers to be a little low. I now hit 6200 RPM at the finish line with my street 275/60/15's, which is right where my Gear/Tire ratio should be, close to redline. My CJ heads have had some minor port work along with a 3 Angle Valve Grind Intake, 4 AVG Exhaust. My Victor Jr. has been port matched to the heads. My Haltech EFI Multiport (8 X 36lb Injectors) 1000 CFM Holley Throttle Body can support over 650HP, although because of my engines low compression I'm about 100HP short. I calculated about 8.5:1 which is where my engine builder screwed up by choosing the wrong pistons. Anyone who asks about my engines compression numbers, I tell them that my engine will run on dirt. Psquare75, I hope that answered your question on what EFI system I'm running. I need to install my new Hurst Line Lock before I get those street drag tires, It doesn't look to hard to do, maybe I'll take some pictures of my installation and post them.

Check out my videos on the torinocobra website.  I don't have line lock and am running the BFG DR in 275/60/15.  You really don't need to burn the heck out of them, just get them a little warm and cleaned off.  That is with 3.56 gears, a slightly modded traction-loc rear, and a slight tuning problem (it appears the front of the car drops a little early)
