Hi everybody- thanks for the help on my posts- another thing i'm 'on the fence' about-Tires. I understand aspect ratio, and total height. Decided to go with 14 x7 rims, for the look, but torn between 225/70 14; with a total height of 26.5, or 245/60 14; total height 25.4. I know 225/70 is prolly closest to the F70; with a 6.2 height,  but wanted a little wider without going over the top and want all 4 the same. Are 245/60 safe for front with no wierdness? What have you guys done?  I dont like giant rears with 15", I think that steals the shape of the fastback with the WW packed. everybody pitch in!Confused

When my Torino was on the road I ran 225/70R14 on 14 X 7 wheels. I tried 60 series but they felt like they were low on air because they tend to "roll" side to side on the 7 inch rim. My recommendation is to stay with a 70 series on the 7 inch rims and go to at least an 8 inch wide rim for 60 series. I'll be using 15 X 8 Magnums and 255/60R15 tires when I get everything back together.

I have a set of 14 Cragar SS that cam on my car and put 235/60 R14   on 14X8 for the rear and 225/60R14 on 14X7 front but felt the tires were to small for the car. If your gonna stick with one size tire and rim go with the 245/60R14 AS i think it will fill the wheel wells better.I have 275/60R15 on 15x7's and don't have any problems but I don't like that wide a tire squeezed on the 7in wide and would rather have it on a wider 8in wide wheel. My front is 215/70R15 but want wider 235/60R15.I had put my 235/60R14 on front but because of the 8 in rim is deep dish it sat closer to the fender lip.It does not rub but looks kinda funny and think 14x7's look better when using same size on all 4 corners.I went that way on my first 73 Torino and it looked good

225/70's are actually equivalent of G70's, 215/70's are F70.

Remember there's a big difference between bias ply tires, bias-belted radials, and steel-belted radials. Each will sit on the wheel and have a different shape and be very different. The old F- or G-7*-14 tires were for bias tires. I'd love to be able to go out and get GR78-14 tires for my sedan. But 215/70R14 and 205/75R14 (what I have now) are really the only common choices available in car tires. The load rating is just high enough (my GVW 5997, these tires 1536x4=6144lbs, just enough) and the diameter is 26.1" and that's better than the ones I took off (215/70R14 is only 25.9" diameter and the load rating was similar, 1554x4=6216lbs).

You can get 225/70R14 in several brands. Cooper Cobras, Firestone Indy 500s, BFGoodrich Radial TA, I think there are Kelly Chargers available in that size, Mastercraft has the Avenger, and then Hankook has the H725 in that size too. Mastercraft, Kelly, Cooper, and a few others also have 215/75R14 tires. Every other tire company doesn't come in until 215/70R14 or 205/75R14.

Nobody, but nobody, makes 225/75R14 anymore (except in ST trailer type, or Coker, I think Coker has some). Also, nobody puts ketchup on a hot dog!

I am starting to do my research on rims, but I am flumoxed about back spacing and lug pattern etc. The site I am looking at for the rims talks mainly in 14 x 7 or 15 x 7 type terms, and I understand that part, but they dont specify on lug pattern, and I dont know the back spacing issue. I suppose when I go to order the question will be asked "what year, make, and model car will this be going on" and that will solve my dilemma. But as far as just shopping right now I wish I could at least rule some things out that I am lusting for....

Lug pattern for Torino's is 5 X 4.5 or as they now say 5 X 144.3

Backspacing needs will vary, depending on the rim width.

So, for example, they state 14x7 (which I think is the stock rim size) has a back spacing of 4.12.

I'll be honest here, 14 inch tires are becoming an extinct thing...hell, even 15" tires are at times a pain in the butt to locate.
The issue you have to look at is getting the correct size tire to support the weight of a 4,000+ pound car safely.
Article at the time with the tires:

Personally, I would look at a 245/60r14 BFG

Or, a 225/70r14

Coker is repopping these now, they must have the BFG molds.
$99 a piece from Summit.

These are what I have now...

Hercules MRX Plus IV in P205/75R14

Load rating is 1536/tire so total load 6144lbs, GVWR is 5997 on my sticker. It's not a lot of overhead at all, so I have to be careful to keep them up to 35psi all the time, and they're S speed rated so I better stay under 112mph. Shoot, since getting to WF I don't think I've exceeded 60mph except for the one time I went 70mph out past Wal-Mart to get ahead of a semi after following it at 30-35mph up the onramp.

I wish I could get an H or better rated tire, they're just built better in general. But the few H, V, W, or Z-rated 14-inch tires are tiny, like 195/60R14 (23.1" diameter), and the load rating is too low (like 1100lbs/tire).

If I need to drive above 75mph much, I'm switching to 16" CVPI wheels so I can run 225/60R16 tires and enjoy H or better speed ratings and safer construction. Reminds me to go ahead and get a set of those wheels (have one, need 3-4 more) so I can be ready. Interstate speed limits out west of here are 80-85mph and I would feel much better with better tires if I have to drive that way. You have to remember I have a problem with driving Torinos above 70mph with bad tires, that's how I lost my '75 back in 1996, to a Uniroyal Tiger Paw tire fire, about 40 minutes northwest of here in Vernon.

BFG still makes those T/A's. $96 each new at TireRack. Still only S (112mph) speed rated though...load limit is a bit higher at 1653lbs/tire (total 6612lbs), but it's still a shame you can't bury the needle, or even go above the 110 mark.

If you want to keep with the 14 inch wheels, Firestone makes a factory (and replacement) tire for Ford Rangers in a 225/70-14 that has a great street pattern - wear great, ride and handle as good as a 14 inch tire can. Tire is white lettered with just the word FIRESTONE on the outside - not a truck looking tire at all.

The Destination LE's are decent, I just like a highway style tread pattern. I think I'll have no choice here pretty soon and will end up with 16's just to be able to buy tires that are worthy of the vehicle and its weight and thrust capabilities. I feel like I let the car down if I merge onto a highway and have to let off at 70 because I worry about the tires I've got. At least they're newer and have better tread, but they're still second rate to me. Worth it for $200 though.

You realize GVWR is the vehicle fully loaded with 6 passengers a trunk full of luggage and full fuel tank, right? I wouldn't sweat it.

I got rid of my 14 inch tires and rims. After I bought a police car I noticed a difference in the way the car drove on the road. That is why 77 and later torino type bodies had 15 inch tires. If you can find 1980's crown vic 15x 6.5 inch rims that will except the small dish caps. Or 15-16 inch and up rims or mags .It is getting limited on tire sizes for this size of car. I could once find P225-70r-15 in H rated format . Now it is T or S rated and used by SUV's. I kept a new set of 14's because when my 2 door 75 torino had them on when I bought  the car. They are Goodyears and I could not find anyone locally who wanted a 215-75R 14 tires.
To get to the point you will notice the difference from 14 to a 15 inch tire . As well as going to a 16 and 17 inch tire.

I noticed a ride height and handling difference with one CVPI on as a spare tire on the left rear. Imagine if I had all four!

So yeah, these 14's will be the last 14's on this car. I should get a few years out of them no matter, but then the 16's will last forever.

It  is the tire makers and car companies that are doing this . Torinos have been out of production for 30 years. And even wosre for those who have cars made earlier. Our cars are for a select market of clients.

They are 10 miles away from me. Corky Coker and my cousin are good friends, but no discount there, LOL. They do have about anything and the best selection of redline radials around. Sweet look - Magnum 500's with new red centers with a set of redline radials.

Alan, I have 1 black 16 inch CVPI rim that is currently a spare on my Bronco II. Interested? BTW, those CVPI rims are also used as spares for 1998-2001 Explorers. CHEAP. Ask a Junkyard to sell you the spares. That is how I obtained mine (with the 4 16 inch Explorer alloy rims I'm using on the BII).

unlovedford, that's a good tip, I didn't know they were the same as the CVPI rim, I could get some of those, toss the generic spare rubber and put something good on there. And there's TONS of Explorers in junkyards thanks to a) Firestone and b) Cash for Clunkers. Works for me.

interceptor460, yeah it might but I'd have to make some changes, base model right taillight, lose some trim, vinyl seat, rubber floor, and the 140mph speedo I just bought is 77-79 so not quite right but I may use it anyway with my needle and maybe a printed face. However, I don't want to drill the A-pillar for a spotlight and I'm not giving up my 351C for a 460. Some magnetic star/shields and other markings for car shows would be appropriate.
