I just put 295 50's on the rear of my 72 and they look incredible. I put my 255 60's up front. I like the way they look and if you want to see, come to the show.

4.5" back spacing on that wheel will be fine.

That sounds cool, now I just have to do the tire research. I love the look of the bias ply tires, but I know that the radials are the way to go, but I want to have tires that will be compatable with the car and not look like more rim than rubber.

According to tire comparison charts I've looked at, 255/60R15 tires are almost the exact same diameter as the original equipment 14 inch tires (G70 14?). The advantage of this, of course, is your speedometer will still be accurate without a speedo gear change.

That would be an added benefit. I was looking over the offcial tire thread, and I like the look of the black GTS on page 10.

Just FYI, I replaced the factory 14 x 7 Magnums on my car this year with repro 15 x 8 Magnums. I was running BFG 225/70R-14's on the factory rims. I still have an the old set of G70-14 Polyglass tires on an old set of steel rims - originals - not repros. The 225-70R-14's are pretty close to the factory tires when you compare them side by side. The specs are pretty close too, although the G70's are slightly taller according to the specs.
I went with 15 x 8's with 4.5 back spacing and 245/60R-15's all the way around. I wanted the car to look stock, but have a more larger tire and lower profile tire for improved preformance. Plus, I don't want to beat up my original magnums which are still very nice. With these specs, the tires fit perfectly front and rear, no clearance issues and it gives the car a slightly more agressive look without appearing like it has non-stock wheels (most people wouldn't know the difference). Plus the 245's are the closest to the original tire diameter (closer than 255's). Long term, I'd like to get a set of repro Polyglass G70-14's to go with the original Magnums. If I show the car, it'd be nice to have the original tires and wheels. |

They still hold air. I park the car on them in winter, and have driven around the block with them, but no more than 25 mph. They haven't seen much sun through there life so they actually aren't as bad as you'd think.

I hobbled my GTS home about 8 miles VERRY carefully when I saw the tires, they were later poly glass, maybe the last generation you could get in a normal manner. They are all craked on the sides. I just told myself to stay clear of any people or cars and be prepared for a four tire blowout.

I am looking at buying some Firestone Indy 500s, but they dont have 245s, they have either 235 or 255. Which do you think I should go with on a 15x8?

IMO, anything less than 27" diameter is too small. 26.5" would be the absolute limit for me. That being said, I ran 225/70R14's on my 69 Ranchero and they were great. Hauled ridiculous loads with them and never had a problem. They were more of a truck tire called Liberator A/T and sold by WalMart.
Did a quick Google search and came up with the following performance tires:

Decided to go with Magnum 500s from Summit, 15x8, and Firestone Firehawk Indy 500, 255/60 R15.

Almost forgot, actually, I did forget... 4.5 inch back space, 5x4.5 bolt circle. Correct?

Perfect. Same backspace I run on my 17x8's with 255/50R17's.
Be sure to post some pics.

Just beautiful! I like the fact that you picked a solid block letter, rather than an outline letter version.
