Took my '72 to the local scales last week and weighed in at 3840 pounds, with a half tank of gas. Took another 75 pounds out of the trunk when I got home, which got me down to 3765. Working on moving the battery to the trunk this weekend saved me another 10 pounds (smaller battery, more amps), including the weight of the cables. Looking to replace the cast, slotted mags with Weld Rodlites in a month or so, so I'm hoping to get within a stones' throw of 3700. After that, it'll be "nickle and dime" weight savings kind of stuff (ie; aluminum radiator and driveshaft, etc).

Just curious....

My 73 came in at 4090 with a full tank and crash bumper and me outside! Think I will weigh it with the bumper off . Save about 130lbs!

I think the 385 series block weighs in about 300 pounds more than a 335 series block, if I am not mistaken...

4400 lbs is damn heavy!

That's pretty fast, what have you done to your Torino to get it into the low 12's?

There are too many variables to tell for sure.  What year 460, what's the hp rating, what exhaust....... ?  my guess would be mid to high 15s

Guess I'll chime in, apparently as the heavyweight.  My '75 Sport with a 460 (aluminum intake and headers, no A/C compressor or condenser) weighs 4500 even with a full tank of gas and without me in it.  I managed a best time of 14.04 @ 97 MPH, although I think a bird flew in front of the electric eye on the big end...most times I was running in the 14.30s.

On average, the 385-series engines weigh about 180-200 lbs more than the 335-series.

My '89 F-150 4x4 weighs about 100 lbs less than my Torino...

Those runs sound exactly like my car with the 460 and 3.00:1 gears.  (I was 14.3 at 98mph all night long)..  But WOW, where did your car pick up the 200+lbs over mine?  (when I weighed mine, it had the iron headed 460, C6, no A/C, AL intake, ex manifolds, 1/2 tank, and full interior, PW, PDL, Cruise, etc and I was in it at the time)

Jim, i'm guessing the other half a tank of fuel and you being in it is the 200pound difference. Isn't gas like 11 or 12lbs per gal.? i forget how much, but 8-9 gals more is gonna wiegh lot more

Fuel is like 6 or 7 pounds per gallon, (lighter than water)

Your car was 4500 with no driver (mine would have been 4250 at the time with no driver), even the 13 gallons I was under from full (I have a 26.5 gallon tank) still only adds 91 pounds..  I also had the spare in the trunk and full interior (no power seats though)

Hey Paul....yeah, kinda forgot I was a member until I got an e-mail recently.  Good to be back, you might say!Smile

Jim...dunno how to explain the weight difference, really.  It makes matters even more puzzling when you consider I don't really have any options in my car.  I weighed mine full of gas, but I'm usually running ¾-tank when I'm at the track, and I've got a 3.50 gear.

Several years ago, I had a '78 LTD II that weighed 4350 with a full tank, the 460 that's in my Torino now, and no driver (also no options to speak of).  I just figured the midsize cars were naturally heavy...at least until I read this post!Confused

Hey Kevin, my monthly reminder..
When you get the plant opened up, don't forget 1973-1976 hood with GT scoop, fenders and bumpers too.   (Doors would be awesome too, especially with window and latch hardware, but very very very tough to do.. )
