    Posted: 31-July-2011 at 12:11PM
As most members know by now, I've been interested in adding a factory ram air setup to my 1972 "Q" code, Old Lazarus.  After a lot of searching, phone calls, web surfing, I've come up short on finding a factory setup, so I'm going to put together a set up using reproduction and original parts.  I test fit the metal base tonight and it fits perfectly.  Plenty of room for the midplate and the seal.  More to follow.  Paul~ Big smile

Nice one! Is this a standard base housing for the air filter? What adaptions have to be made for the ram air?

Thought I'd expand this thread.  OK, for those of you interested in not re-inventing the wheel.  Here's how I built up the ram air unit for my 1972 GTS.

I didn't want to buy a reproduction base and snorkel mainly because I was concerned about the weight of the hood pressing down on the center of the base that sits on the carb, so I researched shaker and ram air unit bases for 1969-1971 and after a lot of dead ends, Tony Lucarz suggested that the 1971 Torino Shaker Base might be a possibility.  Base has two numbers on it (boxed 4 followed by 70143).  The second set of numbers is on the other side of the lip of the base (boxed 4 followed by 70142).  Doing this research was confusing because when I found a base, people would only quote me one of the numbers.  Not until I realized that the base consists of two parts welded together did it finally make sense.

So when the base arrived, I media blasted it, primed it with a couple of coats of Duplicolor DE1612 (Gray Engine Primer).  I like this product because it contains ceramic and can tolerate high heat.  I've used these products for a long time and they do hold up well.  I test fit it onto my carb which is a Holley 4150 650 CFM 4 Barrel Race Carburetor (part number 0-80541-1) which sits on the stock intake manifold (Ford 4 barrel version that came on the 72 "Q" codes) with a thin gasket between it and the manifold.

After test fitting the base on the carburetor, I then painted the base and snorkel with Duplicolor DE1606 (Ford Dark Blue).  The vacuum motor and air filter lid were painted with DE1650 (Cast Coat Aluminum) DE1650.  I really like how this paint goes on and the finish it gives, but stock would be DE1606 on the air filter lid.  I'm using a stock height air filter here; brings the lid up to near the top of the midplate and allows for more air transfer.

Bought the midplate, air filter lid, seal, flapper from Leon @ www.fordramair.com/

Here's what the midplate looked like when it arrived and after I scuffed it up a bit for paint.  The lid is smooth, but the paint should be semi-gloss black.  I used DE1635 (Semi-Gloss Black) on both the top and bottom of the lid.  The bottom was not smoothed out or sealed so I shot some DE1612 on it and it took the semi-gloss paint well.

This area where the flapper lid connects via the rod to the mid-plate is a bit fragile, so I reinforced it inside with a small, slightly larger than the rod, washer on both sides.

Here's the whole setup installed.  I used stainless steel washers and nuts with serrated washers.  Installed the seal and then did some measurements before closing the hood.

And after a short prayer, closed the hood and viola', fits like a glove with no further modifications.  Big smile

Put the scoop back in without the backing plates and took it for a ride yesterday.  Performed great.  Not sure if they ram air does much for performance, but it looks absolutely crazy underneath the hood.  Paul~

Definitely looks great Paul,
Would you share approximately how much you have tied up in the whole thing?
Curious if it is affordable enough to do on the N Code as it would be unique.....

Thanks,
Eric

Chris, Eric, and Joe,
Really appreciate the positive feedback (especially Chris; I should have bought six or seven of those rear window seals years ago; who knew?).  Means a lot to me and inspires me to keep tinkering with the car.
