Does anyone out there know the stock driveshaft length of a 72 with a 429/C6 combo?
I'm trying to work out the logistics when I put the 472 in my car. I am switching from a 302/C6 combo, to the 472/C6, which will require a different length driveshaft. Unfortunately, the closest driveshaft place is 45 minutes away from me, and the shop would have had to charge me about $100 on top of the work to drop it off and pick it up from the place, so I figured I would do it myself.
With that being said, can I reasonably assume a stock length driveshaft would work for my application? I am using Crites mounts, and the rear end is in the stock location, so is a "custom" length driveshaft neccessary? Edited by 72BoB - 09-August-2011 at 1:50AM |

Will it require a different driveshaft? If the 429 c6 has the same tailshaft length as the 302 c6, and the 429 c6 has the crossmember bolt to the frame in the same holes as the 302 c6...
That having been said, I can't help, I have a long tailshaft C6 in my car. I called Denny's and sent them my measurements.

When I did a engine trans swap, the cost to clean ,cut ,weld , paint, and BALANCE , the drive shaft. was worth having the driveshaft shop do it.

I can measure mine when I return home but I had to have the original drive shaft shortened by 3/4" which only cost $65.00.
I cannot confirm if this was because of the Crites mounts or not but without shortening it there was not enough free play to insall the shaft while on the ground causing concerns about bottoming out in the tranny.
If memory serves, the CJ and 429 driveshafts had a greater diameter than other engine/trans combos.
Have you tried using it as is? Might surprise you and fit

I have a 429/C6 combo in my 72 also but it is not original as my car was a Q code 351CJ. what measurements do you need, The tube length or from universal saddel to the other one.Not sure how they measure it. between my measurements an Eric might be able to figure it out.
His is an Original N code 429 but as he said he had it shortened. I believe mine is stock length and not sure if it is original shaft as I don't know if my car came with a C6 behind the Cleveland but they where a popular trans for the Clevelands back then. Anyway let me know how you want it measured and I can measure mine too |

I don't know the first thing about measuring driveshaft lengths... The only things I can remember is from watching Xtreme 4x4 on SPIKE.
I guess I will try and see if the stock one will work... And if it won't I'll just have to figure out if the shop can store my car for a couple days...

Just wondering if someone ever took these measurements? I switched from 302/c4 to 429/c6 and changed the 8 inch over to a 9 inch and my drive-shaft was not the correct length. I think I need somewhere around 51-52 inches or so. What is the length of a 351c/c6 trans drive shaft?

Hmm. And here I was today looking at three different Torino drive shafts, wonder what cars they came off of.
Different yokes, different ODs, and a mix of 1310, 1330 and I want to say a 1340 joint. I thought I had pictures of them but do not. I can see some basic main things, change from a 1310 joint, to say a 1330 or 1340 joint.

How do you tell the difference between the different types of joints?

I am honestly vague about it. Heard different sized yokes referred to alot on different car shows.
Most common I hear is a "1350" which is larger than the 1310 which my 72 originally had on it. I know my 79 150 uses 1350 joints. Oddly enough, the 76 carrier I have in the GTS right now, I want to say is a 1330 ujoint, but I am fuzzy to be honest. I have however run into issues making sure of the exact correct size on the ujoint. Would suggest if replacing, take them in when you get the new parts to match up the caps. Also, I do have three drive shafts I can lay out and measure if anyone needs some info for comparison.

That would really be helpful, I am planning on going and getting one from the junk yard sometime in the near future but it would make it alot easier to know what engine/trans combo to look at.

Well, the engine should be going in the car soon, so I'll be able to let you all know how the stock driveshaft works in my car...

I finally got a chance to measure the factory drive shaft I have. it is 53 1/4 inches center of joint to center of joint. mine has 1330 joints in it and it is out of 351 cj c-6 trans car. I used it when I put the first 460 and c-6 in too.

You should be able to use the drive shaft out of any 2 door 429/460 351M/400 C6 car from the following list: 72-76 torino, montego 74-76 elite, montego, cougar. 400/351M 2 door again: 77-79 T-bird, cougar, LTD II. all of these cars sit on the same platform and wheel base size . The 4 door and the ranchero are longer so the driveshafts would need to be cut on those. Hope that this will help take care Dan

Depending on when it is. Even if I get the driveshaft thing figured out by then I would still want to go. As for the length of the driveshaft, I dont know if I have the long tailshaft for the c6 as it is out of a 69 Grand Marquis so that might be throwing my measurments off. I measured and it seemed like I needed one around 51-52 inches.

OK, will do. As of right now, that is the plan, unless something does not pan out and we have to bail. Right now, just depends on finances but we are planning on going.
Otherwise, any of you guys go to Good Guys in Des Moines?

Guys...I am out this weekend. I have been fighting a severe sinus infection which has left me damn near bed ridden since thursday. I am just now gaining strength and not going to be able to handle a drive that far right now. This thing had kicked my ass and I've lost around 10 pounds in the last week.
Would like to drive and meet up for a good guys show in July in Des Moines if possible, but PM me or probably should start a new discussion under the Events section. |

OK, sorry for taking for ever on this guys.
I finally got out in the shed today while I was cleaning. I have three drive shafts. Shortest to longest, it's a bit of a mystery but I'll do my best to detail.
Shaft#1 Shaft #2 Shaft #3 If anyone sees these are similar to what you have and could use one, let me know. |
