I like this. I was impressed. I would like to know what was done on the front end to prevent any shaking at that speed . I did go way over 125 mph with my 460PI torino . In fact the speedometer read 140 mph plus. I did this on a newly paved highway at 4AM. I did not believe it.I cannot prove it . I did have an rpm gauge on the car. It read 5100 rpm with 27 inch tall tire and 3.00 rear end. You can do the math . The car was not setup for that speed, even it had a police pack. The steering felt loose. And I never did that again. My torino had the areodynamics of a brick.

It was a standing mile.  Static elevation of 2700 ft, maybe 4000 ft DA that day.  about a half mile or so of shut down area.  They call it the finest strech of road in Custer county, which has to be a joke.  Two lane blacktop/chipseal, crowned, cracked, no shoulder and ditches on either side.

The suspension is lowered, eurethane bushings, circle track shocks, aftermarket anti-sway bars, boxed control arms.  2.75 gears in the rear end.

Gonna need an air dam next time around.  The car really started to float when it got over 100 mph, and the drop off at the end of the course made things really exciting.

I could believe it. I was riding in a 68 fastback 20 years or so ago and we hit 125 on an old stretch of interstate. Passed one car like it was parked.

not trying to one up, i many times did a 5 mile stretch at what had to be 140 by distance past 120 on speedometer with a stock 77 460 in a 73 sport with 14's BB springs & stock suspension 3:2? gear. needed little more than one lane in some mild curves. the line changes at high speed but handled smooth no shaking etc. could have gone faster as far has handling felt, but pedal was to the floor. please do not do this unless you are prepared and alone.

Stock speedos are horribly inaccurate at the top end.  Nobody in open road racing uses them unless they're GPS based.

As for speed with 3.25 gears, 5000 rpm = ~120 mph.

The math says 132 with no converter slipage.

This kind of speed is increadibly dangerous, and I would suggest not playing around with it unless your car has the proper safety equipement and you're running in a supervised environment with emergency crews standing by.  It can get ugly in a hurry.

Years ago (14?) when I had my 75 H/O on the road, I did a high speed run. 2.41:1 rear, so I figured wth, it's a highway car.. Sure enough, around 60 MPH, the car got a second wind.. First generation T-tops with bad seals flutter quite a bit around 110 MPH. Oops.

Oh. I had safety equipment. I had my mother's new-at-the-time 'cellular phone' and a AAA card. LOLEmbarrassed

My 74 torino was a C code car with the 460pi engine. If you look in chiltons it lists it at 260 hp for a torino and 275 for a galaxie. Both are the same engines. It had all the police goodies plus goodyear police special tires. I heard of mopar 440 police cars going that fast. I just wanted to try it out myself. I found a newly paved lenth of highway. At 4AM when it was quiet on a sunday morning I let loose. The speedometer read 125 and went  going to just past 140. When it hit that mark I let off the gas. The car was solid to 125 mph,but anymore I was feeling the car float. I read the rpm gauge and the speedometer. It did not make sense when I did the math also. As I stated "I did not believe it. I cannot prove it."And I would not do that again .  It was a great car and lots of fun. I was stupid that I scraped it ,but it was rusting faster than I can afford to fix it. P.S. I kept anything of value and there is alot of parts.

Stange to say ,but the 2 door torinos are more stable than the 4 door models at higher speeds. And my 74 torino 460 PI was a 2 door model my 75  S code is a 4 door model.

Our torinos are not high speed cars .Even if the cars were entered in nascar. Those are well built race cars by the 70's . They are no where close on how nascar race cars were in the 50's and 60's. The earlier generation race cars were closer to a street cars than the 1970's racers were. I have gone fast with gm and mopar cars as well with fords .
I always have this on the back of my mind. What will happen if a wheel will fall off?
And if there are other idiots out there. We see stupid drivers out there. I was once young and a rebel.
I like the thought of a supervised environment and safety first. As carl mentioned 'it can get ugly in a hurry".

Very very cool!

I once held it down for miles and miles up in New York state, running towards Corning, along the NY/Pa state line, in a 71 Mustang.  Speedo was pegged for probably 20 mins.  We were running right with 71 Vette, just flying.  Young and dumb.

I bet you'd pick up a bunch by lowering the nose a couple of inches and adding a front spoiler.

You're absolutely correct!  There was enough air packing up under the front end to lift the it up several inches from where it normally sits!

Thinking air dam and maybe even some suspension limiters to keep it from extending out too far.

Very cool Carl.
I can say this much. Powertour, 4k in 4th {2.75 gears this time around}...we were rolling pretty decent. I didn't have a speedo but it's just flat and stabile.
I do agree about the safety equipment.

Then again...I've done the Omaha-Minneapolis-Omaha run, in right at 4.5 hours each way.
Did you know the trans governor of a '99 V6 contour kicks at 114MPH?
Wipers howl at that speed...

Stupid? Yes. That speed at 3AM. Stupid? YES. But it's fun to roll a 4 lane interstate and no one is around.Wink

" Stock speedos are horrible "  maybe so but if you haven't changed the tire size, the trans .or the gears, I thought they were pretty good , My 73 -429 , which I drove like a mad man, Got clocked on radar By Officer Denbow  , when he caught up to me he said "I  got you going 100 mph down at  the beach what have you got to say for yourself " I said  ya that what was showing too .   I pinned that car at 120  many times  on the maine T.P. , But  I only had it checked  by radar that one time ,  Thank-you
