I'm getting close to adding a new stereo to my wagon. What are the rest of you guys listening too???  I am trying to stay within the factory locations (stereo head unit and speakers)  so I'm thinking a Custom Auto Sound 630 Stereo with 5 1/4 front door speakers with 6 x 9 speakers in the back cargo area. I remember my Dad adding 6 x 9's on the back cargo area plastic covers. I remember him drilling a whole bunch of small holes on the plastic cover and then covering that with the speaker grill. I think the factory wagon back speakers were smaller 4 x 6 or 8 maybe??? According to the FORD manual they faced upward, but my Dad's version (custom) faced each other, which is what I want to go with. The manual doesn't say what size speakers they were though.

Any other ideas on the stereo head unit or speaker brand is appreciated. Thanks for the help!

If I were keeping the OEM dash I'd be doing a Retro Sound.

I didn't in my Cougar. I went with a (now dated) Kenwood EZ500.. Mainly because it 'looked' old.

Secret Audio is an option. You don't even see the head unit and you can leave the factory one where it's at.

I've researched both of these options, Retro sound and Secret Audio. The only thing I don't like about Retrosound is the Custom auto sound stereo USA 630 looks a lil more like the factory radio and the cost is a lil cheaper too. The Secret Audio is kinda pricey and would have to be hidden away somewhere.

Thanks for the input guys none the less. Is there a place that changes out the guts of factory radios to a more modern stereos?

Anyone else have any other options???

I have a Custom Autosound in my F100.

My cat can meow louder than the power this thing puts out. That and the simple aux input, IMO, kills it.

Junk!

Well that definitely changes things then. Thanks for the input Paul. First hand experience definitely goes along way! I read an article on the Retrosound stereos installed in a Mustang fastback Mustangs Plus is building in the last Mustang monthly magazine. I wasn't a big fan about the Ipod input being right there on the face of it. I think I'd rather have it hidden behind the stereo, but we'll see.

The search continues then.

See that's what I hate about my CA unit. It just has a simple "aux" and no dedicated IPOD connector. So I still end up futzing around with the iPod while driving. The Kenwood I used, as well, doesn't have an iPod connector, just a simple set of audio inputs.. but they are behind the unit. 6 years later, they now have under $100 Kenwoods with universal USB connectors that read iPods AND have built in HD radio. Times change.. sigh.

Ha! My '75 has a 70's Kraco with Jet Sound speakers, the '73 has an original radio, the '76 has an early 80's Sanyo Bi-Amp with Sanyo Bi Amp speakers. Wow, things have changed, LOL!

Now, Blaupunkt, Harmon Kardon, and Rockford Fosgate make the tunes in our daily drivers. However, for it's time, that Sanyo really sounded good...

Any other folks make updated stereos that fit like originals besides Custom Autosound and RetroSound???

I've looked on Ebay for old 2 shaft style stereos, but so far have come up empty. Dead

You can find them on eBay, the older style ones. Search by brand name and then sort for the cassette, that'll get you started:

Jensen
Audiovox
Kraco
Sparkomatic
Sony
Kenwood
Pioneer
Sanyo
Alpine
JVC
Panasonic

Don't forget the oddball brands or the ones no one thinks of anymore:

Realistic
Motorola
RCA
Automatic
Learjet
Becker
Blaupunkt
Hitachi
Clarion

Just do a search for phrases like "shaft" or "old school" or "vintage" in categories like Electronics: Car Audio In-Dash Units, or eBay Motors: Vintage Car Parts: Radios and Speakers, or something like that.

For example, $149 is enough to get this Pioneer unit, and it even has an analog display with a real dial, not an LCD screen!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Old-School-Pioneer-KP-5011-Shaft-Style-AM-FM-Stereo-Cassette-/120818051686?pt=Car_Audio_In_Dash_Receivers&hash=item1c21512a66#ht_500wt_1413

Now you have me on a roll...$350 for a Pioneer SUPERTUNER model, analog dial, gorgeous, includes some speakers you could resell, and has a nice looking amp that appears to be small enough to hide up in the dash:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pioneer-Vintage-Super-Tuner-KPX-9000-TS-M2-TS-66-Surface-Mount-Speakers-AMP-/270889138281?pt=Car_Audio_In_Dash_Receivers&vxp=mtr&hash=item3f12403869#ht_500wt_1413

Same seller has a parts radios similar to it for dirt cheap, radio works, 1 broken pushbutton, tape player dead.

I still use the 1987 Alpine deck my Mom or Brother bought for my Mom's old Ford Elite.
I am using a cassette adapter to plug into an iPod.

I have a bunch of old school kenwood amps and a EQ with the DIN cord setup, and yet to bother with installing them.
I have bigger plans for the stereo. Just need to up the alternator first for what I am planning.

UNEARTHED A NOS PIONEER AM/FM/8 TRACK SUPERTUNER IN DASH STEREO in my parts cache. I also found my old cassette to 8 track adapter and all my old 8 tracks.

Now I need to hook up with a savvy electronics guru to figure out my amp, speakers, woofer, etc. Satellite radio would be nice too!

Nice find! I have a bid on an Alpine stereo on Ebay. I'm kinda leary about buying an old stereo, but I got lucky on my gauge cluster so I figure I'll try and keep the lucky streak going....But I'm kinda cheap so I don't want to spend all that much on a 15-20 year  old stereo. LOL

If anyone needs a CD changer, I have a 10 disk Sony unit I'd like to get rid of. It is a FM modulator type.

Can send details and pictures if interested.

Joe-
Nice find on the stereo.

Myself, Paul I know you are good about updating and I have thought about it, but after seeing some installs with the retrosound units, to me I think that is the way to roll. What's funny though is I had no qualms about modifying my dash in the '79 F150.

I was contemplating about just getting a new standard DIN radio, and cutting my dash, but just not in the mood to swap out.
Screwed up deal is I want to pull my dash out regardless to sand and repaint it.

Thanks Andrew!

What I'm hoping to do is change the center dash speaker to a dual speaker "center" speaker, have 4 or 5 way speakers in the door and package shelf OEM locations and a bass speaker in each "opera window" cavity to really fill the cabin with crisp, clean sound. Hoping to put my old 5 band equalizer/amp in the glove box and use a magnetic satellite radio antenna that I can hide inside the trunk while at shows and then set on the trunk filler panel during road trips to enjoy uninterrupted music along the way.

I spent $120 on the dash piece, I'm not cutting it, lol. I have an extra dash in the shed for my Cougar if I decide to go OEM, but I don't see ever doing that.

I'm leaving the factory original AM radio in the dash.
I bought one of these cool little guys and will hide it inside the console wired to aBIG amp in the trunk and uprated speakers whick I have a couple of neat ideas.
I can plug in my iPod or iPhone, or a USB jump drive , or even use an SD card.
I don't need to listen to AM or FM radio anyway.
Probably listen to the engine music most times Wink

Interesting deal.
Thing is, you can simply install an amp and speakers, and control with the iPod directly for volume control.

Myself, Don't know yet. I have other projects...and oddly enough, the old 18w alpine seems to sound plenty good for me for now...
