I posted a bit more in my progress thread.
According to what I discussed with Currie today, as long as the locking is firmly in place, I am ok. So, I am saying I am OK.
Still, I am seriously now considering the '76 housing as a project this year. I have all the parts to piece it together, except a rebuild kit, which is something I am going to look at buying.

I need to dig out the 3.25 center chunk, and see what shape it's in. If the gears are worn smooth, don't know if I want to reuse them.

I just got off of the phone with Currie because I wanted new axle retainers and they had 1/4" enclosed ones as opposed to the "U" shaped ones from Strange and Moser. Anyway I was talking to Travis about the benefit of swapping to the large bearing rear once I go to put the original engine back in. Here's what I learned for anyone else who doesn't know.
- The benefit is not in bear size but in the design. Small bearing rears use ball bearings the large bearing rear uses or can use tapered bearings.
- The large bearing rear can support 35 spline axles but limits center section availability. (?)
- 31 spine axles (theirs) can support 750 horsepower. I wonder why they aren't torque rated.

Anyway since we use this as a collective knowledge base - there's some info.

Agreed.  Back in the 70s it was all about "me".  Check out this commercial.  Just like Burger King, baby!    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJMsFGH4eoQ

I was really surprised with the 4 speed, it did not get ordered as such.

I mean, my car has been a oddity from the get go. The PO had informed me original front brakes were the larger 12 inch rotors from ford. How in the heck did that happen?

Yes. Of the dozen or so that I have personally seen, the 4 speed cars had the "N" case with either 3.25 or 3.50 gear if they were lockers.
Mine is an "N" case  3.50:1 4 pinion 28 spline TracLoc

Thanks Paul.
Another bit of info, was the nodular center sections.
I can not vouch for the automatic cars, but from my understanding Q codes with the top loader were given the Nodular center section {"N" case}.

Still need to dig out the '74 3.25 Q code assembly.

For 1972 with the 351-4V (CJ) motor, the standard rear axle ratios with the 4 speed manual was an open 3.50.  Optional was an open 3.25 or traction-lok 3.25 with the 3.50 traction-lok also an option on early 1972 cars only.  Paul~

If the center section is still good you can wash everything down, throw in some bearings and run it until you decide what you want to do.

My own fault all the way. In looking at the axles before I reinstalled them we saw all of the fractures at the splines and we all knew I was doomed to failure at one point.
Anyhow. Are you considering an upgrade to either 31 or 35 spline axles? I think the 72 rear is limited to  31 spline but the 76 might be good to 40.

In my 4spd Torino I have 3 25 with a 275 60 tire. I wouldn't change it for anything else. 75mph under 3k on the tach.

Ok, for those not paying attention to my current debacle, I lunched an axle on the GTS.
For now, working on getting a replacement axle.
This is moving up the axle project for my 76 9 inch build up.
I need to also rebuild the trackloc carrier I have, and could use advice on it.

Question begs, in a 4 speed car, what were the standard gear ratios for a Q code?
Mine was factory 3.50 gears.
Fun to drive in town. Crappy on the highway at 80mph.

While I love the 2.75's for the highway I currently have, it's too much for the local driving. Plus, burnouts are pretty well a moot thing.

Thought about the 3.25 center chunk I have and using the gears off it, but just looking for suggestions for something more road friendly so I am not spinning the engine too much on the highway.
Like not 4k rpm at 80 type of gearing.

I would love to find something in the 3.10 range, but may end up going with the 3.25's I have sitting in the shed.

Just want to make sure anything i should keep a look out for in this fun.

Thanks as usual for help.
Andrew
