So I'm a victim of a wobbly steering wheel. The problem is in the top end of the column.. Anyone know where I can source a bearing.. or if there is even one available?

I heard of something at one point in time. Let me think about it for a bit and see if I can remember. I think I will eventually need some for my 75 Sport when I do that one as well...

Gary, could you please? The column is a tilt wheel column from a 78 Lincoln Mark V. I suspect the bearings are the same as for the Torino style tilt (columns are extremely similar).

Here's a problem I've been living with, maybe it's bearings as well.   You can pull the wheel out about 1/2" on my car, when you do this, it shuts the car off (turns the key back).  Any thoughts?  I originally thought it was the rag joint, but replacing it many years ago didn't change it..  (been the same for the last 16 years)

Wow.. I guess that's a nice safety kill switch you have there.. And here I am just not wanting to drive the car at all with that small bit of play.

Do you have a tilt column? Sounds like a snap ring in the column is gone

Yes, it's tilt. The most I've had the column apart was to put a wheel on it. the wheel doesn't move in towards the engine and out towards me. but rather it moves up towards the roof and down towards the floor pan.. the tilt itself stays still, it's the center shaft that the wheel bolts onto.

Edit:
Ahhh! you meant JimW. Ignore what I said. Embarrassed

Tilt wheel here as well.  How tough is that to get to and is it a normal snap ring?
As for being a nice kill switch, it's fun until you forget and accidentally tug on it while racing (manually shifting)..  Then you look like an idiot.

Best bet is to pull the column out of the car work on it on a table or held in place with a clamp or maybe a vice. The snap ring is an internal type and Ford still makes them. Part number for upper brg is C7SZ-3517-C THE lower brg is F23Z-3517-A If you have problems with local dealers let me know as I have the correct parts in stock where I work.  1-800-350-3673  option #4  or E-mail gmoore@htford.com

Is it possible to do the upper bearing with the column still in the car? I have a service manual, and it doesn't really say. Should I just as well do both bearings?

Also.. YOU ARE MY HERO! :-)

I did do it once but I also had a bad lower bearing as well. BTW The part number F23Z-3517-A  should be F23Z-3517-B  THE RETAINING CLIP IS DOAZ-3C610-A now . Have a great day gentlemen!  Gary

Not to change the subject of this thread too much, but I figured it was a good place for my question:

So I have the new AGR variable ratio steering gear in (I took pictures, but I need to pare down the size before I stick them up here). I have not yet cut the coupling rivets to replace the rag joint (have a polyurethane one). The way it looked, I assumed I was better off taking the column out of the car.

SO, I am faced with a couple of questions:

1.  Should I get a new column? I found a tilt one with cruise for like $130. The existing column is non-tilt, and the shifter keeps coming apart because the roll pin slips out.

2.  How difficult is column removal for a car I intend to drive? I have ripped them out before.... On cars I did not intend to drive again. Basically, are there any tricks or wisdom I need to know, or is it straightforward now that I have the coupling disconnected? I know there is wiring, the boot, the transmission cable and the collar mount to structure.

3.  Where can I find a rim-blow steering wheel? I was interested in one, although I it seems that they go for a premium, so I might not be that interested. After spending $400 on the steering gear, I am not sure I want to spend another $400 on the steering wheel, if you know what I mean.

4. And, to make it fit in with this post, I will rebuild the column when out to include new bearings.

1. If you want a tilt, now is the time to do it.
2. The column is easy. The hard part is the collar at the base. Other than that,4 bolts, some wires, and the shift cable. You need the gauge cluster out, but you knew that.
3. Rim blow sucks. I had one. Ever drive with one?

Thanks for the comments. I ordered a steering column with tilt - from a 74 Torino. I don't know if it has cruise or not, but I guess we will see.

And I have scrapped the idea of a rim blow wheel. I do like the 74-76 style wheel, so I will stick with that.

Got the steering gear in, so I will pull the existing column and ready the new one when it arrives so that I can have the new rag joint ready to go.
