New pics. Today I managed to sand clean and paint the firewall (forgot a pic, oops). Also undercoated the frame/etc. I sealed up the a/c box panel, and put back the heater motor cover. Tomorrow, the 460 goes in. 

My reducer cones (3" to 2.5") also fit into my mufflers.. how exciting. (for lack of other pics, I showed that).

Well.. I got the firewall painted yesterday (friday).

 

What an ABORTION today.

 

I spent all day, physically pulling the 460/c6 from my Elite (it was all unbolted/unwired, etc, I just had to physically hoist it). What a mess! the transmission fluid bug struck bigtime.

 

Getting it IN the car was fun. I am white trash at it's best.. a combination of a 15# sledge and a craftsman tractor with a plow helped me shove it in.

 

Spent an hour fighting with the transmission xmember.

 

Spent 45 minutes with the passenger side header.

 

An HOUR AND A HALF on the drivers side. Whoever designed these Super Comps needs to be hit off the head with one.

 

So.. what were the casualties?

 

1 pre bent tranny line.. kinked near the starter.

My distributor cap. the clear one that made timing a breeze

a few scratches in my jet hotted headers.. I can deal.

 

tomorrow, I'm going to start putting everything back together... inner fenders/rad support/etc.. then deal with wiring.

 

The fun never stops.

 

Oh.. did I mention it rained off and on outside?

It's very strange you had as many problems as you did, my x-member was the easiest patr of any of the swaps I did, the headers werent' too bad either, on the last 2 times I had the motor out though, I left the headers in place..  (as a matter of fact the pass side header comes out with the engine in the car, only the hood off, drops right out the bottom..  Motor and firewall sure do look nice though, it's going to be real nice to see it all done..  (and 3 hours work for the whoel front end?   WOW!!)

Jim, I pulled the engine with headers on from my Elite. The car had no steering linkage/wiper motor/brake booster.. It came out relatively easily.
 
I removed the headers outside of the car.. no big deal either.
 
However,I had issues getting it *in* because.
1. My transmission is the extra long/extra heavy duty (with the big ribs on top) C6  from a Lincoln Mark III. I think it's 4" longer at the tailshaft than a 'standard' one. That made the 'tip angle' much deeper.
2. Again, the length.. I think the trans mount I'm using has longer studs or something maybe. I had 3 floor jacks getting the x member and transmission together.. (I probably should have done the x member while installing it, instead of after).
3. The headers... Passenger side was ok.. went from the bottom up. No A/C made it almost fall into place.. I had the engine up 2" off the frame. Drivers side was awful.  I was cursing Hooker headers, Ford for the car, Saginaw for their steering box, my floor jack, and myself for doing this at all. Angry

I wonder if because I had a Saginaw box they fit differently. I had the car literally jacked up as high as I could, the engine up as high as IT could go... They still were a bitch. I don't remember having this trouble in the Elite... but.. I did install them lying in the dirt, and I was able to dig out the ground as they 'got stuck'.
 
So, we'll see what happens.. Today if I can get the firewall reassembled, and the nose back on I'll be happy.

Paul I once had a Tech tell that if I wanted to install a 460 that the Saginaw gear would have to go and a ford box would takr it's place.  It was said that there wouldn't be enough clearance on the left side! Now I think he was on to something. Gary

Busy day today.

I put back all the firewall components. POR15d bolts, wiper motor, brake booster, etc. The "new" rad support and inner fenders are on (These are from my Elite, which I had sandblasted, por15d and undercoated/etc). Started swapping components from the inner fenders over, ran the wiring harnesses, cleaned up the intake manifold, and put a fender in place, just so I can say it looks sort of like a car again.



I just hope the damn thing will run.

Well. like I said, I have 12 days till the 'rents come home.. I'd rather have a non running car, with the yard clean, than a yard full of sh*t, with a frame/engine running, lol.

Meh, not much done today. The nose is "loosely" on.. I'll leave it like this until the hood is on, then I can line up the panels. I also POR15'd a bunch of the front brackets on the rad support... and my hands. 

And yes, my car is powered by a Mr Fusion.

That's a special aftermarket piece. Tree leaves in my town are a decades old remedy for rusty battery trays. I could send you some for $10 a leaf. :-)

Is that the transducer cover on top of the Carb? Or the flux capcitor? LOL !  Looking good though. Hey i just scored some closed chamber heads for my Torino with Boss 351 stainless steel valves and some other goodies. Now I will order my 392 stroker kit! Gary

Is there enough room to dump the exhaust out the sides??  I was hoping I can do that with mine when I get to that point. Some of you guys mentioned that there was not much room in the torinos for 3" - 4" pipes in the rear axle area.

The problem with side exit is the rear lower control arms, the frame hangs abit low back there and 3" pipes will hit the ground occasionally unless your car sits up high..
(I had 2.5" out the side and it was close enough that I ripped one off occasionally)

Well, Lots done, I guess.
Carb is on, throttle is hooked up.. Kickdown is not. I hooked up the fuel line and gauge setup I got. Still need to go from there to the filter to the pump.

I changed my cracked dizzy cap (Summit makes a clear one. That was a $40 mistake).
I installed my PA performance 3g alternator kit, as well as the 3g alternator I got from FordFuelInjection.com

My alternator was dynoed, it came with a sheet, LOL.

I wired up a relay for the ignition, and hid it behind the battery.
I also mounted a fuse panel (I think it's actually a fuse block from my father's 57 Chevy) in a small Radio Shack project box. This box has fuses for the fan, ign, and will have some for the headlights.

I still need to wire loom the wires... but man, I discovered velcro zip ties from Radio Shack (my mother got me some, long story).

In other news.. my Flexalite fan VSC controller is JUNK!. I bought this 5 years ago, it worked when I parked the car.. now whenever power is applied to that board, the fan turns on! WTF! I found out that FAL redesigned the board... 3 years ago. I emailed em, hoping they'll cut me a break. This is rediculous.

My air cleaner may JUST BARELY clear the hood.. I hope. I wanted to run the stock cleaner sealed to the hoodscoop.. We'll see when the hood is on.

     Has any one ever made an exaust  out of square channel stock ( for example  a peice that is 1 1/2"  X 6"  schld  40  that can receave a 460 manifold and dump out to a good expansion chamber. ?  Or should I try to make one that will work with the proper back preasure?  A quick connect as well for inspection change overs.

Steve, NASCAR uses "oval" pipe for ground clearance.. that help?
 
Well, it doesn't run yet, as I spent 2 hours trying to get the @!^!%#*( distributor lined up. I only have like, 30 degrees of actual turning, because of a stupid temp sensor I need to remove (which is leaving tomorrow) and the plug wires need to be re aligned for proper length.

My starter is also grinding itself to pieces on every 3rd attempt, so I ordered a gear reduction piece while I'm at it..

However, I did wire loom everything, heh.

I'll play with exhaust while I wait for a starter to arrive.

Hood scoop hole cut. I can go 14x4 and have clearance for the top of the scoop. I want to use the OEM bottom, sealed to the hood. I just need to find a seal from a random vehicles trunk that will seal tightly.  (note seal that doesnt fit)

A month since my last update..
 :roll:

Exhaust is done.. Just need to spray it with some BBQ grill paint and bolt it back up.
Parts are
3" Jegs X pipe
3" > 2.5" flowmaster reducer cones
2.5" Borla ProXS mufflers
2.5" Flowmaster "UFit" Kit.. I had to cut and weld it all.

I put flanges after the mufflers, so I can drop the center section if I need to drop a tranny.. or want to run cutouts .

Not bad for my first attempt at this sort of thing.

Looks very nice!   Car should sound very healthy..   Not as deep as an H, but will have a very hard edge to it..   Did you totally solve the starter problem?

Jim, Yes.. The issue was that gear lash as people were saying on the 460 forum. I took the starter, slotted the unthreaded hole, and machined off (well, angle grinder) half of teh 'seat' on the starter flange, so I could  have some adjustment. Now it's perfect, or at least, a million times better than before, and no more grinding.

Can't wait.  I am taking pics of my trials and tribulations, I just havent' pulled them out of the camera yet..  (two broken valve springs, just the inners).  I have lots of work to do, especially since the seal got damaged and it looks like some of it got to the pan, so off that comes as well.. )
 
At least so far it looks like the cam and valve seats survived the ruckus..
