second coated the transmission crossmember with the Eastwood Rust Inhibitor... blasted a few parts... and worked on the floor insulation taping some areas that needed addressed. Will be out of town next weekend for the Memorial Day holiday, but will be taking a few vacation days the following weekend (originally to attend Carlisle) to try and make some REAL progress on the Tomato. Wish me luck! Edited by TV 2M8O - 22-May-2016 at 8:46AM |

**CLICK ON PICS TO ENLARGE AND CLICK AGAIN TO SUPERSIZE** Well got the wife's garden cart "restoration" completed this weekend.... blasted the drive shaft... got it, the transmission crossmember and core support painted... repaired a thin spot in the timing cover I found after sandblasting it... pulled out all my new gaskets and engine parts to make sure I had the majority of them ready for installation... and started removing the accessories and brackets from my original 460 to get them cleaned, prepped and detailed for reassembly onto my new engine. Next weekend I hope to finish cleaning the block and start final install of the oil pan, timing cover, water pump, intake manifold, the OEM valve covers (until I can get the MT covers spread a bit to fit the heads) and get a couple coats of dark Ford blue applied. Eager to get the engine buttoned up and installed so I can do a quick start to insure she's ready to roar back to life!

Looks great Joe. Gives me the motivation to sandblast my radiator support, inner fenders, and get them painted while I wait to get the motor back from the machine shop.
On that oil pan gasket, if it is the same as the Felpro one piece, you have to drill out/enlarge the hole on each corner. If that makes sense. Disregard if you already knew this.

Joe, I thought I already pitched my old gasket. Guess not. Here's a couple pictures of the gasket and where I had to drill.
If I remember correctly: while drilling, the bit will catch and almost (for lack of a better word) "rip" the metal washer out of the gasket. I just used a dab of copper Permatex in each hole to prevent leaks. Hopefully the Ford Racing/Motorsport gasket is already provisioned for the earlier big blocks.

Mark.... if the Motorsport gasket doesn't have the enlarged hole already, I have a set of gasket punches which should make it an easy modification!
Again, thanks for the heads up!

**CLICK ON PICS TO ENLARGE AND CLICK AGAIN TO SUPERSIZE** Well Saturday was a real test of stamina and determination! Must have been 110 degrees upstairs at the dealership (Man sweat really BURNS when it gets into your eyes! LOL) but I kept plugging away until I got everything pulled off my original engine... made a "map" of where the different bolt sizes go on the water pump/timing cover (Ya know what's funny... I have three 460 engines and only ONE set of water pump/timing cover hardware! WTH??? Guess I'll be placing an AMK order!).... and started blasting some of the hardware.

Yes, but some of my original engine components simply need degreasing and maintain the original finish. I degreased my clutch fan years ago when I first got the car and it cleaned up pretty nicely, so perhaps I'll only be blasting brackets... Time will tell!

Well got the drive shaft cleared... and started putting the 460 together... got the timing cover, water pump and oil pan installed and the exhaust ports masked so I can get the engine painted. I started cleaning the power steering hard lines before calling it (another sweltering day!). Edited by TV 2M8O - 18-June-2016 at 10:50AM |

**CLICK ON PICS TO ENLARGE AND CLICK AGAIN TO SUPERSIZE** Evidently AMK doesn't have the long flange head bolts needed for the water pump hardware so I ordered some washers the correct OD from Fastenal to use with the supplied bolts so I could keep moving forward. I got the lower section of the 460 primed.... then first coated... and rehung the driver's door... and blasted a few brackets and pulleys to get ready to rehang on the engine once it's back in the car. I also broke down an old set of tires to blast and clean up the rims to see if they would seal with some old tires and hold air for use as rollers for the Tomato when she goes back to the guys at Far From Factory for final bodywork and paint..... SOON I HOPE!! Edited by TV 2M8O - 26-June-2016 at 7:42AM |

Well got the 460 rolled over to assemble the top side... cleaned the gasket surfaces... chased all the tapped holes... installed the intake studs... and dry fit the intake before installing the gaskets and RTV along the front and rear end seals.... SO top side assembly and paint stalled until the necessary nipple can be gotten.... but I did go ahead and coat the intake manifold gasket and set it in place so that much will be ready once I get the nipple and wrap up the intake installation. HAPPY FOURTH TO ALL MY FELLOW TORINOITES!

that sucks joe, those things are generally pressed in, so if you find the right one you'll probably have to remove the pump and press it in. good news is... you haven't run the engine so the pump should come off without tearing the gasket!

Well a day of regression.... was getting my all my stuff together to mount my harmonic balancer and guess what I found in the Ziploc bag will all the hardware and woodruff key? The damn oil slinger for the timing chain! Jumped on line to see if it was a necessity and a couple of the sites I trust both said "don't forget to reinstall the oil slinger", so two weekends of work went out the window as I broke everything down to access the timing set! At least I know things are in order, LOL, and there will be plenty of paint on the 460 by the time it gets installed!! I also rebuilt my AC idler pulley because the bearing seized up when I blasted it. I was surprised that the original bearing said JAPAN on it... but I guess by the mid '70s things had already begun to move offshore. A bead of RTV to seal the outer cover back on and I will do a bit of beautification on the visible side to make it more appealing before spraying it satin black to match the other pulleys.
Next weekend, I plan on installing the engine mounts, rolling the engine over and touching up the top side before dropping the 460 into place. Wish me luck......... Edited by TV 2M8O - 31-July-2016 at 8:34AM |
