Good work, good hard work.

How do you decide when to use the POR putty versus the seam sealer? Is the POR putty a harder material when cured and best for contouring/shaping before paint?

I've never used the POR and discovered the Eastwood line when it came out.

Don,

The POR Putty is VERY strong! When I first came upon it, I took a wad and flattened it out to about an 1/8" thick and let it cure, then tried breaking it in half..... I WAS VERY SURPRISED how much force it took, so I use it when I need to fill/contour areas that will have some depth to them.

I use the seam sealer to flow into the seams and remain a bit pliable.....

Thanks Joe, I'll look into it. Our Performance products carries the POR products here, but not the Eastwood stuff.

**CLICK ON PICS TO ENLARGE AND CLICK AGAIN TO SUPERSIZE**

Broke out the quart of Eastwood Brushable Seam Sealer and started sealing up the floor pan seams. I've had the stuff since 2009 at the dealership in a cabinet in an uncontrolled temperature area of the shop that saw temperature extremes between about 40 & 110+ and I thought for sure the stuff would be unusable, but suprisingly, the sealer was still very creamy and spreadable and flowed very well sealing the underbody floor seams of the Tomato.....

Next up is prepping the front wheelhouses and core support for paint.

I pulled the front wheelhouses and core support into the paint booth and washed them down in preperation for a coat of POR15....

the shot the first coat of POR15 to the underside of the wheelhouses.....

and hit both side of the core support....

I also got the frame cavity in the underbody and the frame rails POR15ed and first coated with Eastwood Satin Chassis Black.

Next weekend, I'll be shooting the underbody with POR15 and top coating with the Eastwood Chassis Black!

John,

No the car isn't at the body shop that will be doing final bodywork and paint yet.... it's still at the dealership in their abandoned body shop area. Chrysler stole their DODGE franchise back during the whole Detroit bail-out scam, so now as a used car sales and service/repair shop they had no need to keep the body shop open nor fight with OSHA & the EPA about the various regulations a paint center must adhere to.

John,
LOL, that's why I'm shooting the non-beauty parts myself.... a few runs, drips, etc were common on the chassis parts and under hood areas!!
Gonna shoot the interior and trunk black as you did to help hide the red from showing around door and trim panels. I'll be using the deluxe trunk dress up kit in my trunk so the exposed sheet metal will "disappear" when shot black.

You can practice on those lesser parts that get runs on them. The pros use a razor blade to remove runs. They literally scrape them off to virtually level, and then buff it smooth. I've watched it done many times, one was on a beautiful red 1968 Mustang with gold pearl in it, plus a thin silver stripe that was in the mid coat. The run was going down the door under the handle area, and when finished you couldn't see it. It was cool to see him drag the razor blade along the fresh clear, he just scraped it flat.

You can do it, just take your time.

"runs" Shocked should have used krylon!  they used to advertize "no runs, no drips, no errors" remember that???
i've shaved them with a razor blade, and used masking tape to lift a fresh run off.

I had to swing by the dealership to see what supplies I may need to pick up to continue shooting the underside of the Tomato this weekend, so I decided to grab the camera and take a few shots of the frame pocket and frame rails to see how well they came out...

Looks pretty good but I definately need to shoot some black INSIDE the frame rails! LOL, that will be first thing on the list to do on Saturday!

Today I got the underside of the Tomato painted with POR15 and the first coat of Eastwood Satin Black Chassis paint.... plus I'll be wearing some POR15 freckles for a week or so! Turned out pretty good so far....

Next weekend, the agenda is to apply the seam sealer along the wheelhouses and the joints on the firewall and get those areas painted with POR15 and coated with some chassis black.

Had company this weekend so was a shortened play day Saturday...

I shot the core support with POR15 Self Etching Primer so it can be finish coated with Eastwood Underhood Black...

I also got the front suspension broken down and several parts staged for taking to have acid dipped to clean the rust, grease and grime off of...

Next week I plan to apply the seam sealer to the rear wheelhouses and to the firewall and cowl areas.

I got the firewall, cowl area and wheelhouses masked and ready for seam sealer...

also inspected the hood hinges and transmission crossmember I had cleaned at the local plating company....

and got the bumper reinforcements, front suspension and steering linkages and front bumper hangers ready to drop off Wednesday to have them cleaned by the platers...

Next weekend plans are to apply the seam sealer to the cowl, firewall and wheelhouses and get everything POR15'ed and then shot with first coat of Chassis Black.

Got the POR15 and first coat of Chassis Black applied to the frame....

front wheelhouses....

the core support and rear bumper filler reinforcement....

My tubes of seam sealer were dried out so I'll have to order a few new tubes before I can get all the seams sealed up. So I started playing with my front bumper pushbar idea. Dennis Carpenter sent me an email with the dimensions and profile of their 78-79 F series bumper guard, so I made a cardboard template of the guard and got to it....

Looks promising, so I brought the front bumper home so I can continue to tinker with the template and get it fine tuned.

**CLICK ON PICS TO ENLARGE AND CLICK AGAIN TO SUPERSIZE**
Early last week, I stumbled across an Eastwood tip by Kevin Tetz where he was using seam sealer in the can to apply the sealer to the seams, so I bought the mixing board and spatula set to give it a try. The material came in, so Saturday morning I set about giving it a try...

I used a paint mixing stick to stir up the sealer (added a little Eastwood PRE to thin it slightly) and scooped up a medium sized glob and mixed it a bit more on the board with the spreader. I then got a bit on the spreader and started across the top seam on the firewall... the technique didn't work too well on the overlap nor around the nib that ticks out from the seam nor on the seam that immediately rolls under, so I devised a new approach.... using a 1" wide brush, I applied the sealer along the seams, pulled the tape and then feathered and smoothed the sealer using a 2" brush wetted with the PRE. Worked pretty well to give the sealer a smooth "professional" look......

Here's a closer view of one of the more complex area.....

I also got my inner braces tacked into my rear control arms....

I'll turn it over to a pro to do the finish welding and the boxing of the arms.

This week, I'll order some more seam sealer (tubes and can) from Eastwood so next weekend I can seal the rear wheelhouse seams, then wipe down the cowl and firewall area to remove the film of seam sealer caused by the smoothing technique and then apply the POR15 and the first coat of Eastwood Underhood Satin Black. Once all that has dried then I will apply the finish coat of Chassis Black to the chassis and underbody and Underhood Black to the firewall and then it will be time to reassemble and hang the rear end!!
OMG.... Did I just utter the word REASSEMBLE???
