What would be the best carburator to use on my 1972 Q-code 351 cobra jet with the stock spread bore manifold with no adapter plate. Thanks.

I replaced the holley that came with my 73 CJ with a 4300D spreadbore carb. I found one for sale on e bay that had been completely cleaned and rebuilt. Not concourse, but its really close.
Carb works fine also other than the standard hesitation during acceleration that all 4300D's have.
Site for the guy I bought it from is www.oldcrabs.com.
Hope this helps.

no funny stuff, just the facts. I will probably send the carb out to pony carburators in Az. www.ponycarburators.com they do a mod to these carbs that fixes the dead spot and a few other things. Its fine for now, just cannot jump on it or it hesitates big time.
Had Pony carbs rebuild the carb on my mothers 67 mustang fastback, and it is 100% perfect both in appearance, and how it runs. Practically runs like an EFI car....

That is impressive. My '76 carb was like that, but is now junk from sitting so long. Never had another that good since.

you got luckier than alot of folks.  Over the years a i have heard very little good about pony carbs and their pricing is way high.

Just joking.

Most Ford enthusiasts are well aware of the 351 Cleveland engine, and its short, but well known, history. However there is confusion regarding the 351M and 400 engines.

The 351M and 400 engines were derived from the 351C, and are all considered part of Fords "335 series" of engines.

The 400 engine was developed in in 1970 in response to the increase in pollution control measures placed on auto manufacturers. Big and heavy cars were still the fad, but the traditional Ford powerplants, such as the 390 and 460, could not meet the new emissions requirements.

Ford needed a "go between" engine, something with more displacement than the Cleveland, but not as much as the 385 series motors. Ford also needed an engine that could be used in trucks and large vehicles, and utilize their existing heavy-duty transmissions. The 351C would not work due to its small-block "Windsor" bellhousing bolt pattern.

Engineers took the Cleveland motor as a starting point and modified it in several ways:
400 cid.
Bellhousing pattern same as 429/460 (to allow use of already existing heavy-duty transmissions.
Main journal diameter increased by 0.25" to 3.00" for greater bearing surface area (incidentally, same as a 351W)
Crank stroke increased from 3.50" to 4.00" to gain 50 cid.
Deck height increased from 9.206" to 10.297" accommodate larger stroke
New intake manifold for wider deck.
Heads are identical in design to 351-2V, but have larger chambers to reduce compression, may also have air injection ports.
Different harmonic balancer and flexplate than 351C

351M
Same block as 400, but crank is back to 3.50" stroke.
Pistons have thicker compression height to maintain compression a 8.2:1 in the tall deck.
Different harmonic balancer than 400
Production of the 400 and 351M engines ceased in the early 80's, as oil prices began to sky rocket and federal EPA regulations became stricter. Ford turned to its Windsor series engines as the primary V8 options for passenger cars and trucks.

Hope this helps.

short answer: look at the thermostat housing

the 351C T-stat housing will be mounted flush flat to the top of the timing case of the block

the 351M/400 T-stat housing will be mounted up on about a 1" tall riser on the timing case housing

Windsor T-stat housing is mounted facing forward to the intake manifold

this pic shows the M block T-stat riser. also, most but not all have the standing rib on the other side of the distributor hole. no Clevelands have the standing rib

ok. that ltd2 was most likely a 351m I believe ford dropped the 400 in 78 or other way around.the car had cobra jet stickers on fenders and a cobra jet emblem on the dash. It had al.valve covers with ford on them and a cobra jet air.I am pretty sure the t stat was level with the intake.Guy selling it said owner said it was a 351c.not thank for the info.

they both have the T-stat level with the intake, see how the riser is the same height as the intake end seal rail? the 351C intake is about 1" lower than the M/400 intake, there's just no riser needed to get it there because the deck height of the 351C is about 1" lower than the 351M/400

here's a 351C

another sure tell:

the 351C uses 2 bolts to hold the motor mount to the block

the 351M/400 uses 3 bolts to hold the mount to the block

this pic shows both the 3 bolt mount pattern AND the 2 bolt mount positions(not drilled)

the width of the intake manifold end seals is also different between the 351C vs 351M/400
or the straight across distance between the cylinder head deck surfaces on the flat rails

the 351C valley width measures 6-31/32", or just about 7"

the 351M/400 valley width measures 8-17/32", or just about 8 1/2"

http://351cleveland.wetpaint.com/page/Block+400+FMX

the FMX block also has unfinished 302/5.0/351W/351C 2 bolt mount bosses on the (US) passenger side, the oil filter side has only 1 unfinished 2 bolt mount bosses, and the regular 3 bolt mount bosses for 351M/400
