I am just...old. Wish some of the tidbits included the ability to pick the correct winning lotto numbers for Powerball, LOL.

The Ford semi with the 66's on sure brings back memories. The car in the middle on top is like my first car and the truck looks like a F-1000, the first truck I drove. The car had a 390 and the truck a 534 with a 5 speed trans. and 2 speed rear. The good old days!

I didn't know medium/heavy duty Ford trucks had 5 speeds and 2 speed rears too. |

My Dad and Grand Father had several Ford tractor trailers in the 50's and 60's. The ones I drove were 62's and 64's and 66's. They all had 534 gas engines, the 62's and 64's were single axle trucks with 5-speed trans and 2 speed rears. When new they pulled 3 axel dump trailers that hauled hard coal into New York City. As they were replaced with newer diesel twin screw tractors they were used as dump trucks and lime spreaders. The 66 f-1000 was a used unit, it was a ten wheeler with the 534 gas and an eight speed transmission. That unit was a transit concrete mixer. My Father did make one of the 62's into a ten wheeler with a 13 speed direct transmission. It took a special bell housing to connect to the 534, he was told it was only the 2nd one like it east of the Mississippi at the time. That 62 was used as a lime spreader and in the winter it was leased to the State as a plow and cinder spreader truck. I drove that truck right out of high school. It would pull 10 tons of lime through a plowed field in 3rd gear.

^A 13 speed trans? Wow. I hadn't heard of the 534 engine before either, or the F-1000. All of those must be pretty rare now.

I have some old pictures of the F-1000's with the coal buckets, all I have to do is remember how to scan them! That 13 speed was a direct transmission not like the 13 speed over drive where you can split some gears! The direct you had to hit ever gear, you could start off in 3rd but after that you had to hit every gear. I'll never forget the first real hard hill I went up with a heavy load I missed a gear, when I found one and left the clutch back out I snapped an axel. That was the first and last time that ever happened to me. Over 30 years more driving and never tore an other truck up. Never had to bring a truck home on a hook after that 1st time. When that axel broke it broke at the end by the hub. All we had to do was remove the axel cap slide the axel out and slide a new one in, replace the nuts and a way I went! Boy I was glad I didn't mess up the new transmission . Pop wasn't too happy but he knew he messed up too when he first started!

I'd love to see those pictures! Reminds me of when dad worked on our tobacco farm in the 60's. I'm still getting used to manual shift, but I started in our truck with granny gear, and it was nice.
Still need to drag ours out
