Hello,
I need your help. It´s about a 1972 Gran Torino. Could anybody tell me how much watt the headlamps (sealed beam) original have? What´s correct? Is it correct that all four headlamps burn if I pull the light switch or is it correct that only two headlamps burn while I drive and the other two are only high-beam headlights? Thank you very much. Greetings Dirk Please excuse my bad english. |

Not sure about wattage off the top of my head, but only the outer lights are lit for low beams. The center lights are active for high beams.

Hi Keith,
thank you for your answer. I already imagined that only the external(outer) lamps should burn, but I wasn´t sure. On my Torino all four lamps burnt. Now none of them works. ;-) Greetings Dirk |

Check your dimmer switch and wiring. I have had them go bad - first I could click for normal low/high use, then it was all 4 lights or nothing, then finally it was nothing. No matter how many times I tapped it.

Lights are on a metal auto resetting circuit breaker in the fusebox could check that is plugged in tight.
outer 2 for low beams and all 4 for high is normal. Wattage varies by brand but low 35 t0 40watt high 50 to 60 |

...great forum. thank you all for your help.
because the complete current of all four headlamps go through the light switch, the "thermal-fuse" of the light switch activated and the lights goes out.
now, I will wiring the lamps like original.
If someone is interested in the wiring diagram, here is the link. A member of the german torino forum send it to me:
Many greetings over the pond

The resettable circuit breaker is built into the headlight switch.
If using a light of any higher wattage then the original standard incandesant bulb, the increased current draw will cause the breaker to trip then reset when it cools down and this cycle will continue. Eventually the breaker in the switch will become more sensitive and trip even sooner. Best way is to install relays into the high beam circuit ( and possibly the low beams if using higher wattage lows) to stop this from happening.

hi ian,
you are right. When I fix it, I will install a relais. hi malcolm, many americans have their roots in germany or poland. a lot of germans saw the chance for a better living in the new continent. and a few german words found their way to the american speech. not all have a positiv connotation and came from germanys darkest years like Blitzkrieg, Panzer, Führer... this is not my list. It´s an excerpt of a german magazin. I´m not sure if it´s true and so many words are known in the united states.
ps: the mother of my grandmother came from poland too. have a nice weekend dirk Edited by GT72 - 06-April-2013 at 3:27AM |
