I have what seems to be(and told) an all original 1968(title date) Gran Torino GT 2 door Hardtop with options that weren't available on the 1968's. Like the 351 windsor, functional hood scoop, headrests. VIN code is H and indicates it's a true 351 car and VIN also indicates a 1969 car.

Is this common, has anyone come across this before?? I'm wondering if I may have one of the first "1969" Torinos ever built and any help would be appreciated!!

Thank you

Does it have marker Lights on the rear quarter panels?
Stuff can be moved from car to car like seats etc,
68's don't have marker lights on the 1/4's ...69's do.

"Gran" does not come into the picture until 1972.

"GT" in general over the years has meant "Grand Touring" although the overuse of letter combinations over time has been little more than as somebody once said, "Alphabet Soup."

If you used the VIN to order a Marti report, that would reveal quite a lot of info. He offers same day emailed service now for $50 for a deluxe report.

I do believe they began making scoops available as an option partway through '68. I'd have to look it up though as all I have is a recollection of reading about it.

Scoops were standard on all Torino GT models in '68-'69. You could order a GT without it if you specified delete on that part. I had a '69 GT with the window sticker that was ordered that way.

I don't believe a hood scoop was ever offered as a factory option on a 1968 Torino... or Fairlane.
It was first available/standard on GT's in 1969, as mentioned could be deleted . Although many where installed by dealers and owners on 68's.
....As I recall, but  I don't recall where I got the info FWIW.

Thank you all for the feed back! I think I just have a fluke car that somehow was titled 68 but had all 69 options, including the VIN.

If I don't sell it in the next few weeks I'll probably order a marti report and look around for the build sheet.

@ FordnMerc, the door panels of the car have emblems saying the words "Gran Torino" and so do badges on the outside of the car. I'm not sure what you mean but thanks

There's plenty of literature out there that talks about the 'Introduction' of the 'Gran Torino' in 1972 because that was the year of its first appearance. Ford did not use that name/designation until that year. I have seen people call late 60s models 'Gran Torino' before, but it's just not accurate prior to '72. I think the farther in time we get away from any Torinos having been built, the more confusion enters the picture. You see that across the board where old cars are concerned.

Badges aside, I think that the bottom line in your case is that if you have a '68 that genuinely left the factory with various features of the '69 models that it technically wasn't intended to have, it's one that is even more worthy of preserving than an average version and will stand out from the crowd....always a fun thing. Thumbs Up

Not so 68 did not come with a scoop, I got a one new in April of 68 a gt fastback 390 (335hp) 4 speed never had a scoop and they did not offer one in 68. I traded a 67 vette roadster for it they gave me the Torino and $500.
