My car has a 351M could be a 400 have pulled oil pan to be sure suspect 351M, C6, and 2.75 gears, no a/c.
The engine runs ok now, but I'm going to pull it to freshen it up.
Going with edelbrock performer rpm dual plane intake, 600-650cfm carb. (Maybe) m haven't decided on cam yet, think I want something eith a little lope to it.
Will have heads rebuilt so coil bind shouldn't be a problem.
My concerns are how much machine work can the block handle?
I've heard the had thin casting to begin with, I dont know how out of round the cylinders are etc. What are thoughts on headers style brand etc and cam profile

is the engine a transplant for sure or do you think it may be the original?

if it's original the 5th digit of the VIN will tell you what it is, if the valve cover sticker has gone missing

if the VC sticker is there, it'll say something like 'Engine Family 351M/400' then under that there'll be a 'Displacement' specifically listed

It's a transplant, the 5th digit is an H, 351C 2V was the original engine.

when you get the pan off & get a look, here's what you're looking for

on the front counterweight the 400 crank casting number is 5M, the 351M casting number is 1K

If the engine is a 351M, I'd seriously consider swapping in a 400M crank and rods.  Here's a link to an article HRM did a decade and a half ago that still has a lot of good info:

Original cam ground 4 degrees retarded. If you are going to put some $ in it PS122 has the right advice. Intake and a 4bbl carb alone will not gain much other than loss of MPG. 6925-1HKR Hooker super comp headers are the only ones that fit these in our cars at 600-800 a set. ( Painted- or Ceramic coated ).

I desperately need headers for my 351, but just cannot see spending so much money. Maybe a set will materialize before me...

Wouldn't I have to find a 400 block too.
The 351m has a 3 1/2" bore and the 400 has a 4" bore or am I wrong?

those are the crank strokes for each engine, they both have a 4" bore

in 'overlap'  years the cast codes for both engines are identical, they use the same block

Not sure what part of Indiana you are from but this is on CL in the Dayton, OH area:
I have a 1979 Ford 400. It came out of a 79 lincon complete from carb to pan ready to bolt in, has power steering pump and air condition compressor has a rebuilt Holley carb It has 74,000 miles no oil leaks ran like a sewing machine when pulled a month ago we bought the Lincoln thinking it had a 460 in it for a bronco I'm restoring but found out it had a 400 in it when we got it home. Also have a really smooth running 351 m that came out the bronco both engines are great running engines $350.00 for 400 m and $250.00 for 351m or $550.00 for both. These are getting hard to find Call or text 937-210-2793 guarantee both engines to run
