Of all places...Advance Auto Parts carries a Lares part # 841. It's a reman box and has the 3.5 lock-to-lock steering. I got mine for $96 plus a core.

Watch out. I bought an 841 box for my LTD II and it did NOT fit. At all. In any way. Had to go with a stock box. Advance was very nice and took it back after we spent some time on the Lares tech-line to no avail.

I put this box in mine about a year ago. No issues aside from jacking the motor up to get the box in. No regrets. I think I got mine for around the same price through Advance also. Good luck with it. the 1/2 turn makes the wheel quite a tighter, but not go enough to steer with your knee. Hah.

I wish I could find a quicker ratio manual box.

Isn't there a 3:1 box out of a 71 Mustang that works?

I believe so. I am pretty happy with my Saginaw, but it is not applicable to all models, apparently.

Hey BadHAbit, did the box fit the car? I am interested and the cost is cheaper and easier than rebuilding mine. Thanks

Cool. How does it compare with a SPA-T or late model box for steering feel, tightnes, and ratio?

Picked one up. Very inexpensive compared to the options I was looking at. Fit like a glove, no problems. Now it is a matter of getting the car driving.

I've driven both in the same vehicle. SPA-T is a bit tighter, but not enough IMO to justify a $200 price differential. |

Great! Thanks for that info. My Saginaw on the wagon is 3.3 turns and works well, but I only have 2 of them and 5 Torinos.

ALRIGHT! thanks y'all!
let me get this straight... Lares 841 is 3.5, tighter/quicker than the stock torino box. Fits direct replacement? Stock Torino pittman arm bolts right on? Stock Torino fluid lines screw right in? Stock Torino steering column/rag joint bolts right up? and all for about $100? AND it is available at the local AutoZone!? |
