Did you ever get EFI for your car ? They make complete throttle body set-ups from 875.00 - to -1200.00 . Or you could just take the complete system off a 87-93 302 car or truck for free .

Hey Joe, which cfm Projection did you buy, and how did that turn out in use?

I bought the 900cfm version new when I began on my Ranchero, and had planned to put it on a 400 I had. Things changed and all I did with the TBI was take the throttle plate section out to alter the arm for an AOD. I have to get the parts all back together, make sure it's all there, an then sell it.

It was a great idea back then. Now there are tons more ways to convert to EFI on older cars etc. Now for my RS I will use the factory 97 Explorer wiring and computer, all accessories, on a 351 stroked 302.

Joe-
If you happen to need a pump, I do have a used projection pump from the unit I got from Paul Psquare75 years ago and ended up just selling it off.
The pump is an inline unit, mount to a frame rail near the tank as it needs to be fed from the tank as close as possible.

I think the phantom unit would be a good option for the wagon considering the goofy tank layout the wagons have for gas tanks.
The adjustability is killer.

Just make darn sure you have a radiator shop boil that tank out before you go using a hole saw on the thing.

Andy, I will need an EFI pump. The wagon has not run since it took a crap at the beginning of the Moonshine Festival. It will be getting a warmed-over 5.0, 5 speed so I will need a good pump. I am tired of this car giving me fits, so chunking the current, entire drivetrain. The EFI system will be the factory Ford GT40 upper and lower intakes, stock Explorer MAF, stock injectors. I will also need a pump for the Holley Projection I have on the shelf.

I plan on getting the tank boiled out and sealed. Maybe I'm getting older, or just spoiled by modern vehicles, but breaking down is one surefire way to piss me off and get me to plug up the sawzall. Thanks!

Good plan Joe, the Explorer 302 will move the weight very well.

The stock EFi pumps are under 100 ltr/hr, and any versions from an early 85 CFI to the 2001 Explorer will do fine for a mild 19lbs injector engine. The common aftermarket pumps are 155 and 255lt/hr, and are not needed but a fine choice for buying a new replacement pump.

How do you plan to mount a pump, in the tank in some way, or outside with an external type pump? I'm interested because I will need a big one for my planned EFI engine. I prefer an in tank pump in general given the return line that has to be included, the cooling, and maybe it's a little quieter.

Also, what computer do you plan to run it with, what wiring harness etc? The Fox Mustang stuff is still easy to come by, but it doesn't include a tune ideal for the better GT40 heads, and definitely not good for any change of compression. Mine will be an Explorer PCM and wiring, with a 10:1 compression for the initial 302 engine. PCM tuning will be required and it gets expensive quickly.

For yours if you select one engine combination to start and end with, then one PCM tune will take care of it. Regards,
Don

Joe send me a pm I'll mail it to you and if it works pay me something for the thing. I'll ask Paul if he recalls the spec. Otherwise I'd say ford Econoline frame rail mounted pump. This was in a Hotrod efi article in the mid 90's and it was noted the frame rail mounted ford pumps did good.

As far as return line just run two new lines. Tie the return hose into the filler neck vent line.

Don, I would love to use an internal pump on the wagon, but because of the tank placement and tight confines, it will have to be an external one. I will be using the Explorer PCM and a custom-made 1986 Fox harness wired up by one of our knowledgeable members. Because of my luck with both wagons, I am running new EFI-spec fuel and return lines, multiple filters, and the clean tank. I have even thought of retrofitting an Crown Vic tank or fuel cell in the rear well of the red wagon, since it has no 3rd seat. However, the explosion hazard probability increases with that rear compartment location. Nothing substantial to absorb an impact. Actually, on any of them, it's a chancy proposition.

I do indeed want a good PCM tune to extract the best performance/economy potential out of the engine.

I think with the 5.0 and a 5 speed honestly it'll run good provided at least 3.50 gearing out back in the 9". Wait you are running a 9" right??
Also if you want I have a 3.50 set of gears I gave $25 at a swap meet if you can use them

Very good, planned well. I have two 97 Explorer PCM's right now, and I'm trying to decide if I need to or should use the 98 PCM's instead. The 98-01 use several different circuits that aren't in the 96/97's, including an improved trans range sensor. I'm pondering which will be best for my 91 Lincoln the most, to keep EGR(internal preferably). I'm going to ask Alan of Dirty Dog Perf, some questions related to the PCM, and the 4R's that I have to build.

BTW, if you might consider an automatic, the 4R would be easy given that computer system.

The gearing should be in the 3.25 to 3.70 range I think. The Explorer with 29" tires and 302 are all 3.73:1, and my friend with a 94 F150 has 3.55 gears and 275/50/15's, about a 26" tire I think. Those gears do well for towing, and decent fuel mileage. Adjust the gearing bigger if you had to have more grunt, but the five speed 1st gear should be plenty I think.

3.50 gears would be perfect, given the 5 speed 1st gear ratio, the 255/55-18 (29 inch tall) rear tires, and the natural torque of the 5.0 GT40 engines for my application. I believe I am going 5 and 6 speed with everything except my GT Squire and the Falcon wagon. AOD will eventually find it's way into the little car, but a non-electronic AOD for a BBF is just too hard to come by. Therefore, the big wagon will have to make due with the C6.

Besides loving to shift manually, I like the control, sound, and involvement a manual transmission gives. A side benefit is that your cam selections do not have to depend on a stall converter.

That'll do fine then, make the magic happen. I'll get back with you if I cannot use the 97 PCM's or the one 97 harness I just bought.

For that GT40 combo, I suggest also using the Explorer front accessories, all of them. They are easy to come by, and it's tucked in to the engine very close, plus the alternator is a 120-140+ amp 4G unit. There are only two brackets that hold everything in front, and they bolt to the heads alone. The Explorer battery harness includes the AC clutch and alternator wiring, so get those too if you go that route.

Small question , is that the engine with the coil packs ? That will look so cool ! Get a higher Regulator an Pressure Gauge so you can rev it up an tune in some better mpg . And it should run clean so you can ditch the cats and still pass smog .

The Explorer 302 uses two coil packs which are mounted right above where the distributor would be. They have no distributor, just a cam synchronizer and crank sensor that perform that task.
