I can't say enough about this product. I urge anyone with the red light to red light gears to install this on their transmission. Direct bolt up with factory console. In my case a 351 cleveland 4 speed and 391 gears. Screaming down the road trying to do 60mph. Now just hit the button and 70 mph at a cool 2300 rpm. And the fun factor is incredible. It's almost like a 5 speed with a manual valve body. I never had so much fun. I couldn't believe it was the same car. ... Worth every penny. -Rick-

Rick, I've been waiting for your review on this. Glad that it worked out. I hope to follow your lead on this as well. Please post up some pix showing the finished product. PS, the engine is getting shipped back this week!

That is what I plan on doing with both of my rancheros one day (460/C6) with 3.00 and 2.75 gears. I plan on doing the 74 first. Glad to hear a very happy review.

I didn't even pull the transmission or shifter. Left the linkage in place and pulled the tail shaft off and replaced it with their tail shaft. The only thing is you have to shorten the drive shaft about 14 inches.Any issues they have great customer service...Hey John did Ron put that engine on the dyno?

Yes. The unit itself is the same for all vehicles. The tail shaft is different. The overdrive itself bolts on to the different applications of tail shafts.

So it just adds an overdrive gear?

No. It's a lot more than just an overdrive. You can play with it. You can split the gears. You can be in 3rd gear and instead of shifting into 4th you can just hit the button and be in 3rd overdrive. Supposedly they claim that a 4 speed car 391 or 411 finish the quarter mile time in 4th gear. Now with their o.d. you start in 1st gear shift into second then at red line with your foot still to the floor switch into o.d. then shift into 3rd o.d. and that's where you will end up at the end of the quarter mile.

That is crazy cool.Makes a 4 speed into an 8 speed. Reminds me of the Plymouth Champs that had the Twin Stick transmissions.

yep, it ~can~ be used as a high/low gear splitter,
but that may not always be practical in normal driving I really like the side-effect of shortening the D-shaft, this LWB is killin me! I'm not even sure exactly what the critical speed of my shaft is |

Is there any limit on how much torque it can handle?

You can use them in trucks and for towing. I would imagine they can handle quite a bit.

The tow truck I'm currently driving could really use one, too...it's a ZF 5-speed, 5.13 gears, behind an IDI diesel that doesn't like going much over 1900rpm. Problem is 1900rpm is right about 40mph for this POS and I like driving 55mph on the interstates...
To put this in perspective, the tach redlines at 3300rpm (supposed to get to 3750rpm I guess but it won't pull past 3300 anyway). That's about 68mph. That's top speed for this truck unless you're going downhill in neutral after running up the hill at 68mph. Good news, the guys are trying to find a taller ring/pinion for this POS. 4.63 is the lowest they were offered factory. 4.10 and 3.73 thin ring RP's for D80s are out there. They're gonna try for 3.73s. That would reduce the 68mph rpm from 3300 to about 2400. Means that 1900rpm sweet spot would come on around 55mph where I like to drive. But if I could throw a GV back there it's be like having a 2-speed axle, per se. 22% drop would let me run 55mph at about 2050rpm or so. That's not bad. And being able to add shifts would help pulling. First 4.14 Second 2.37 Second OD 1.85 Third 1.42 Third OD 1.11 Fourth 1.00 Fourth OD 0.78 Fifth 0.76 Fifth OD 0.59 Yeah buddy, shift 1-2-3-3 over-4-4 over-5 over. Like a 7 speed Spicer or something. First overdrive and fifth would not be needed. Probably don't need second overdrive either. As it is, I barely use first, basically to get the truck moved a few feet from a dead stop, then I'm in second to 10mph, third to 15-18mph, fourth to 24-30mph, and fifth. The truck pulls from 500rpm up in the lower gears and will pull from 900-1000rpm in fourth or fifth. I have to have like, a Lincoln Navigator on deck (3 tons) and something on the wheel lift (another ton maybe more) before I have to start revving up before shifting up. |

5.13. That is darn steep. With those gears you could tow a truck with a v6 Chevette.

I think they were designed for those few Super Duties that had 460 gas engines. Problem is that Dana 80 in there has a unique to 87-97 Ford carrier. You can't really get gears for them. That's why some companies make those thin ring ones. I just hope it'll fit in there and work right and not be too light duty.
I've been testing a few things in the truck to get the mileage up. Boss man drives it like he stole it, 70mph on the road, standing on it around town. He got 8.8mpg for those tanks. I never exceed 55-60mph except in emergencies. I shift early and often. I get 11.3 to 11.5mpg for most tanks I have done over the last few thousand miles. So I tried shifting even earlier and this last tank was 11.8mpg so I think I'm going to cut my top speed back to 52mph (tailgaters be damned) and start shifting into 5th at 20-21mph instead of 24-25mph. 4.10 gears are coming. That's the good news. The bad news is while this truck is down, they're putting me in the International 4700 with 4.44 gears and an automatic. Ouch. That's the mosquito fogger truck. Has to warm up for like, an hour, before it'll accelerate at all. |

I drove a 79 Ford strap truck for a while, 351M / 3 speed / unknown gear
on a long distance highway run it made like 8.3 mpg empty & 8.1 mpg with a large car on within reason they're just gonna do what they do, the rear gear will dictate fuel consumption |

I'm going to run a 3.00 ratio with a 5 speed manual in a Torino. Should do very well on the highway, I'd think.
