I am going to be restoring my grille this winter.  I know the silver part is "Argent Silver" but what colour do I use for the black?  Just a flat black paint?

Is there a specific paint code that I can give the paint shop to make up the colours?

Thanks Mike, I always thought it was black.

Now does anyone have the paint codes for argent silver and dark argent so I can get some mixed up?

I know, two fancy names for silver and dark gray.

Anyway, doing some research it seems that the Dark Argent is the same colour used on some Mustang grilles (1970 Mach 1).  I have seen some spray bombs offered by restoration companies that specialize in Mustang parts, but if I can get a local paint shop to mix it up it would be easier than dealing with over the border shipping.

My grille is now solid black, as my dad painted it sometime in the 70's.  I want to go back to the original GTS two tone grille, similar to what this car has:

I don't have the codes but
Here's your argent, in Canada.

How close to Detoit are you?  NPD is only a short ride from the bridge or tunnel.

CLASSIC MUSTANG CANADA has the dark argent.

Thanks for the info Mike.  I will make a few phone calls this week and see what the shipping costs are.  Maybe it will just be easier to order it after all since no one seems to have the paint codes.

I am pretty far from Detroit, so going there isn't really an option.  From reading on some Mustang forums, it seems that NPD has the best dark argent for colour match out there and the Scott Drake stuff is too light.  I may give NPD a call though, sometimes the shipping isn't too bad, especially if it's MI.  Distance was NPD is WAY closer to me than those Canadian vendors.

Anyone have any idea how many cans I'd need?  I figure one per color should be good?

Over the winter I was able to get my grille restored. I ended up using Easy-Off oven cleaner to strip the old paint down to the bare plastic. It worked really well. I just soaked the grille Easy-Off, put it in a large garbage bag and let it soak for several hours. High pressure water took the paint off with ease and appeared to do no damage to the plastic. This trick was originally used by plastic modellers but I saw other guys using it for real car parts.

I ended up with the NPD paint (even though the price was TRIPLED by the time I got jammed with the UPS border fees). It appears to be the closest paints out there to the factory paints at least according to the Mustang guys. Anyway, I stripped the grille, primed it, painted it all silver argent. Then masked it (HUGE pain to do) and did the dark argent and installed an NOS emblem. I think the results are about as close to factory as I can get.

Original grille with bad 1970's respray peeling.

Silver Argent:

Masked and sprayed Dark Argent:

Final Result:

That is just superb. I looked at my grill today (same spraybombed black) and I see what you mean by it being a real pain. Wow, that is a job.

The 1972 Gran Torino Sport used a specially painted two-tone grille (argent and dark argent).  Only the 1972 GTS got this grille and the 1972 Ranchero GT.  Other 1972 Gran Torinos had the same grille but it was painted differently.  The non-Sport 1972 Gran Torinos grilles were a single colour, all argent.  Now you can use a non-Sport grille in a Sport but the colours will be incorrect.  However, you can paint the grille and it will look correct for a Sport.

It's the lighter of the two argents, as I listed in my post up above.  It is the same colour as the light argent in the grille.
