How much trouble is it to replace the package tray on a 73 Gran Torino Sport?

Easy.
  1. Remove rear seat bench.
  2. Remove 2 bolts holding bottom of seatback in place, remove seat back.
  3. Find 2 small phillip screws holding package tray clips and remove.
  4. Slid out package tray.
  5. Compare old tray against $40+shipping piece from Dearborn Classics.
  6. Contemplate buying fiberbord from Home Depot. Go find that old Jigsaw.
  7. Argue with wife that "Its not the point I already bought it. Its that I could make it"
  8. Watch Wife roll eyes and leave in a huff.
  9. Stare at shoes.
  10. Install new package tray from DBC.
  11. Install tray clips.
  12. Install backseat and align hold down brackets to holes and bolt in.
  13. Replace back seat.
  14. Put jig saw away.
See, easy !!

So, what do I do? Go to Depot or DBC for $40! I vote not Depot! I"ll try DBC. How did you know I looked at DBC for a new package tray? Any how Thanks, I"ll wait for Fathers day, too late for X-mas! Harry

I made my own out of Luan board and covered it in fabric. It was easy!! I have less than 20 bucks in it. I even drilled the holes in it just like the factory. Took an hour to do. Even redid the panels on the sides between the headliner and the package tray! They took 30 mins.

All joking aside, yes, you can make your own, but don't.

It is just 1/8th inch pressed fiberboard and you could easily use the old as a pattern for a new one. But you will never get the same finish as they do.  I won't look right.  And its a place everyone will see and will get a lot of sun, which will bleach out any fabric unless its made for UV protection like Sunbrella.

Nope. Its much like the original. Pressed fiberboard with a thick paper type material glued to the top.

I made mine with uv protected material. Matched the interior fabric. Looks a lot better then what came on the car. The local print shop told me, he could reproduce the finish that would match what was on the car when it was new. But I think the cloth matching the interior looks better and it shows by the compliments I get at shows!

Repops are so cheap it's not worth dealing with making one.. unless they don't make one for your car.
