I've never really did any body work to speak of. My uncle said he'd help me with the body work once I got the car moving under its own power but it seemed kind of silly to me to mount the motor and tranny without painting the firewall first?
What should I do?

I like the firewall painted the body color. To me, it really makes the engine compartment look cleaner. The exception is if you are restoring one that was black from the factory. Just my opinion.

That's true. I thought all 73s were body color from factory.

I think 72 was the only year that the firewall was NOT painted body color, but rather painted black.

I thought only early 72's got a black firewall, like cars built in late 1971.

I believe Walt is correct. Only certain '72 models had the black firewall. I have had both with and without the blackened firewalls in my '72 models. My '73's and up have all been painted the body color.

Canadian built cars had body colour firewalls for 1972. My March built Oakville car has a red firewall.

So I could give the firewall a good wirewheeling and POR-15 it and all is well?
Mine was originally a 73 and the fire wall was a gold color but I think I'm just gonna go black. I think it would make the engine stand out more.

What ever flips your trigger! Its your car, your fire wall, what ever you like is the way to go! Its a Torino, it will look just fine any color you paint it.

If you are going to paint it black, use a black that matches the inner fenders, core support, etc. with a new hood pad, hoses, etc, a shiny engine with chrome would POP!

From all we have been able to figure there was no rhyme or reason to whether or not the firewalls were body color or black from the factory. Seemed one factory did it one way and another the other way then the years mattered... yada yada yada.

As for what to do... it is your preference.
I like the body color to set it off but the black looks good too! lol

As for the POR-15, have read people saying use all the directions to make it right.
Others say you can just wire wheel it, clean it and then spray it.

I would agree that for 72 (my only experience) that it could be either. My red one had body colored fire wall, the pewter one has black. Go figure.

Yeah, we THINK it had to do with the assembly plant.
Members compared cars built around the same time and the only difference we could find was the assembly plants were different. ALL that came from 1 were black, where MOST from another were body color... again, Ford back then was sooo unpredictable! lol

Like others have said make sure you follow the directions to a tee and top coat it. Even though the sun won't necessarily hit it directly, with time it does "dull" as it did on my inner fender wells.

Good luck and post some pics.

Look at Montego01's build thread. His firewall is a semi-gloss or a satin black, as is his frame and front end parts.

POR 15 is an expensive and poor choice if there is no rust.  Clean with a good engine cleaner to get rix of oil|gease and use rattle can primer and chassis black.  POR 15 is good on rough rust, but looks awful on regular surfaces.  Rattle can option is cheaper too.
