Went to start up the car after 2 weeks of it sitting. Engine turned over but wouldn't start and battery was weak.  I let it charge about half an hour and my son noticed that the garage stunk of plastic and we saw the whole garage was filled with smoke.  I noticed that the wiring on the ends of the Accel ignition coil were melted completely and the plastic of the wires was completed melted and ashed all the way to the inside of the distributor.

I had to disconnect the wiring harness towards the firewall (not sure if this is stock or prior owner did it) with the last 24" of wires that go to the ignition coil.   Any thoughts on why charging it caused this? The battery hasn't had to be charged for awhile but I had the car serviced back in November and they had to adjust the timing and redid the points/condenser.  Not sure why all of a sudden a charge almost burned down my house and Torino. Is it possible a faulty starter switch/voltage regulator/etc could be the primary fault? Thanks.

if for some reason the ignition was in the on position, and the points were closed voltage would be going into the coil and would burn up the coil (it has happened to me twice on one of my other cars, the kids were listening to the radio without the car running- key on--- not accessory Angry)

Old Car 101: don't leave the ignition switch in Run position if the engine is not running

them points are Fried, time for another new set

or maybe now you think a points eliminator module is worth the $ ?

the car will start easier

idle smoother

use less gas

go longer between easier tune-ups

the timing won't change as the points wear

it pays for itself quickly...
