Went to the local dyno place with some buddies today.. Brought the Cougar. 523 Street Bruiser from CarsbyCarl Started at a baseline of 365HP/418 ft lbs.. Went down from there as it got hot. Let it sit a few minutes. Bumped up timing 2 degrees (from 28 to 30) went to 376HP @ 5100 /420 ft lbs @ 4200. I didn't want to get greedy.. Engine pinged with another dizzy at 34 degrees total. For an out of the box carb, the air fuel was "OK" around 13.5/13.9 at WOT. No detonation at all or anything. I didn't have any jets to change in anyway. This was through a C6/9" Consensus is these mufflers hurt a lot.. You can see in the video how the engine just isn't happy past a certain point with them. I should have put the flanges in front of the mufflers, not in back, but I didn't, so I couldn't take them out of the equation. For 2.25" Internal diameter mufflers, these sure sound badass First run where I pussied out at 4500 RPM... (My tach said 5K.. oops). Note my friends and how they all stop talking immediately. Best run Not sure what's up with the initial air fuel readings there. Next up is to lose these mufflers and try some 3" units.

Wow! That thing just sounds MEAN.. (when you look at the car it just seems more luxury/classy than animal, but the sound just takes over)
I think you will pick up some with various mods definitely.. As for the A/F at idle, that's probably not bad, it is pretty much right where it needs to be (if not a touch lean) during the run though.
Was that a Mustang dyno or a dynojet?

Thats not a lot of hp for that cubic inch, you should be well over 400hp.Post the internal specs, comp ratio, heads, etc.I'll get more than that from a 351W!

Mostly stock iron heads, small carb, untuned, I'm about where it should be, the "ultimate goal" is only 400 at the wheels, lol. I'd like to see how driveable that 400 wheel HP 351W is. Mine is daily driveable |

Through a C6 and a 9" rear... That's probably around 500hp and 580tq, and it probably makes more than 400/500 for a couple thousand RPM... A 400+ inch SBF with great heads will get there, but with less area under the curve.
With a carb and intake change plus a 3" exhaust, there's likely 50-60 hp here, then another 100+ in the heads easy.. Pauls will also last forever using a cast crank and stock pass car block with 2 bolt mains. (heck, mine at ~600hp will probably last forever and is still street drivable)
Not knocking a strong small block, I see them pushing smaller cars to the single digits all the time, but these cars are HEAVY, so without FI or juice, for a streetable car, cubes count..

I'm used to a lot of crankshaft hp.After I looked at your numbers your over 400 at the crank, with a 20% parasitic loss through the drivetrain your more like 450 at the crank.Tune it up some and go 2.5 inch exhaust all the way out would help and you'll get your 400+.Happy tuning

The rear is done its a 4 pinion trac lok out of a 68 mustang with 3.50 richmond gears.Trans is an AOD from a 5.0 mustang.Trans is also done waiting for the motor,Hell the whole chassis is done, working on the body now.Going to use a stock converter as I want the lockup feature for the best gas mileage on the highway. The overdrive will be sweet on the highway, should be able to do like 150mph on the open roads!lol

Think twice about using a stock 5.0 lockup converter behind a big HP motor. If you cam for 450+ hp then the stock converter and 3.50 gears will make you cry off the line a bit.. (that and I'm not sure the stock lock-up clutches will hold well over 450lb ft of tq in a 3900+lb car)
You may want to consider a PI or similar 10" lockup converter with a 3000 stall.. Not saying it won't work, but at the hp levels you're striving for, you're probably in the 245+ degree at .050 range, and ide quality won't be terribly friendly with a stock stall.
For what it's worth, I ran a stock stall behind the 460 and the 545 initially, and even the 545 with a 254/262 solid cam was not thrilled about idling.. The 460 (230 deg at .050 hydraulic) was limited to a 1.97 60' time with a dead hook and 4.33 gears because of the 1800 rpm stall speed and 4400lb weight of the car..
Who is doing your aod and have you done any chassis mods or just a resto?

If this was going to be my weekend car only I agree with you.I 'd go 3200 stall and like a 4.10 rear, but this will be my daily driver for a while till I get settled in vegas and probably pick up another 5.0 mustang. That much stall the trans is constantly slipping and with the vegas heat my trans would be toast in stop and go traffic. As far as the cam I'm going roller, much smoother idling even with a larger size cam.The lobes are rounder than a flat tappet cam giving you better idling and its going to be fuel injected,no carbs for me!I am a drag racer, but this car won't be beat at the track(much).I build all my own motors and trannys. The trans is done with a very nice shift kit and a hardened input shaft, there well known for breakage. No chassis mods, just the striat up resto with poly bushings.I'm toying with the idea of an air ride kit, already talked to air ride technologies about it.It would be a custom kit,as they don't offer one for the torino's.It would be the only one in the country!Have to see how the budget allows for it,the injection kit is first. My car has factory front and rear sway bars, but I'm going to the larger 1 1/8,7/8 combo.Any other mods you know about?Pass them on!

I trust you'll have it well sorted and will eagerly await the results of your buildup. As for mods, well, the sky is the limit, lots of ideas here and more out there. Big brakes are a good idea with big power, bagging it is a neat idea but you'd need to rework your spring pockets up front and a couple other things. Coil overs are another intersting idea, going with a Heim joint on the strut rods up front..
Injection should be easy using parts from the 5.0 crowd.. The only thing specific to the 351 is the lower intake..
