Ok. any words of wisdom on a 8.8 4.10 ls dif.on a ford ranger. Though I had a rear brake issue as every now and then it would feel like it was dragging or something also would make a clunk sound and feel ok.Last night in a real down pour it started to shake esp in steering wheel This morning it did not want to move then a snap and it moved.Never have had a rear end apart What am I looking for?

Could be either a sticking brake, worn ring/pinion, or the clutches are toast in the differential. My '01 F150 has the 9.75 L/S rear with 3.55's. Lots of chatter when pulling away from a stoplight at in turns. Also, the truck would jerk every once in a while like a single serious miss. Just one, then later another. Figured it needed COP's, and was wondering about the transmission in addition to the rear end. Found that there was a broken tooth in the ring that would occasionally find it's way into the ring and it would "pop" the truck. Worn out clutched in the L/S caused the chatter.

Open it up and see what the fluid looks like, and what kind of debris is in there.

The Explorer rear ends are easy to come by these days, when you see what's up in yours, consider buying a different unit whole to use for parts if needed. The 95-01 Explorers have disc brakes, a relatively easy swap to older Explorers and the Rangers. The 4.10 gears were common in any 4WD Explorer in that year range.

The only tough part is if the diff has to come out or the pinion nut, to work on the bearing there or change gears. Doing the LS clutches are easy, axle bearings too.

If this is a disc brake rear end, look at the emergency brake shoes....
Little tiny midget drum brake in the hat of the rotor prone to sticking, rust, and hardware failures.
Common to have issues up here in the snowbelt.

Drum brakes but was my though until it started shaking in rain storm.Felt like u joints except they are new.

sat for a yr till I rebuilt the frame.Brakes are new.I though cable till it started shaking in the rain storm.

Drove it to day before starting on rear end. It did not shake at all?

Jacked up car. Left wheel will not turn forward only back? Right wheel turns freely.Remove wheel and drum with bar between studs can turn left wheel.Is this common with a ls rear end.I do know on gm poss .rear end both wheels turn in same direction on reg. rear go in opp. directions.Will open up housing tomorrow.

Problem solved I hope. Left brakes worn down and cooked Right shoes show small cracks. These were new inc. drums when I bought truck.Probably checked emergency brake for inspection and it hung up. Does not explain shacking in steering wheel in real bad rain storm.
