79 thunderbird tanks (should be the same) were available in 21 and 27.5 gallon.

There is a reproduction 26 gallon fuel tank that is made for the 1974, 1975 and 1976 Gran Torino's, elites, montegos and cougars (except the station wagons). I am not 100% sure if this tank will fit your application though, maybe one of the other members will know for sure.

The measurements are: 36-1/4" long x 28-1/8" wide x 10-1/2" high. This tank comes with LOO3 O-ring and lock ring for sending unit. Without internal vent tube, made with High quality Ni-terne plated steel gas tank with 3-year warranty.
The part number is F4A. You will have to scroll down the page about four fifths of the way down to see it.

They also make a 26 gallon reproduction fuel tank for the 1974 through 1979 ranchero's (except station wagon). The measurements of this tank are: 36-1/4" long x 28-1/8" wide x 10-1/2" high. Comes with LOO3 O-ring and lock ring for sending unit. Without internal vent tube.

I am not sure if this tank will fit your application though, maybe one of the other members will know for sure. The part number for this fuel tank is: F4C.

All I've found new For my 79 Thunderbird which should be the same for LTD II is the 21 gallon tank and its an exact replacement. I'm sorry but I can't remember where I got it. I'm looking for the paper work.

There is a person who is selling his '78 thunderbird project car and he had also wrote in his advertisement that he has another very similar car that he will be parting out very soon soon. Maybe it is another '78 thunderbird or LTD II with the tank that you are looking for. To see it Click Here.
