My 16 year old (daughter) chose my father's 1971 Ranchero Squire as her first car.  She has done a lot of work on it already (yes, she turned the wrenches while my husband supervised and pointed!), but now it's running rough.  It idles ok but dies while she's driving down the street or pulling out at a stop sign, etc.  There is also gas leaking from the side of the carburetor (I can take pics).  My husband is good with most things, but he is not a "carburetor guy".  My dad rebuilt it in 2012 (he was a mechanic), and it hasn't been driven much since.  Thoughts?  Vacuum?  New carb kit?

Thanks!

Sounds like the accelerator pump may be leaking. post a pic of where its coming from...this will show a lot. pump need to give a squirt of fuel when taking off, probably thats whats wrong with it.

Picture worked. Great looking Ranchero. On the stumbling issue on take off, another thing to check would be the vac. advance diaphram or the breaker plate assembly ( I think that's what it's called) it is what the points attach to, & when vacuum is applied it advances the spark. It wears and gets sloppy & will cause stumbling ,missing. My '73 would do the same thing, I replaced it problem went away.

I find that last picture quite SHOCKING...Sorry couldn't help myself! I think it's great that a member of the younger generation has taken a liking to cars of our generation...and female as well.  Thumbs Up  Now back to the fuel leak/ stumble?

Yes! My husband fixed it! We replaced the accelerator pump diaphragm, and now it runs like a top again! I love this forum, and we can't get enough of Pop pop's car! My daughter fell in love with it when she was about 11 or 12. My dad had plans years ago to redo it and had the trim off getting ready to paint when a tornado ripped his shop apart--with him in it! Fortunately, he was fine, but lots of the original trim disappeared into an F4 and wound up who-knows-where. The car got put on the back burner again because rebuilding his business was a priority. The man he had paint the car when he was getting it ready for my daughter wouldn't put the word "Squire" back on it without the trim. We have the emblems, so maybe one day we will get it all back. Right now, it's all red, and she's thrilled with it so I am, too!

It is a really nice car and deserves to be put back like the day it rolled off the line. If you're not already get on facebook and get on all the torino/ranchero groups you'll have those trim pieces in no time.

Excellent, great story, and I'm sure she will take good care of it as it came from the family.

Glad your husband was able to get the fuel issue under control. I'm sure you feel a lot safer with your daughter driving a vehicle that's not going to leave her stranded or worse.
