PERFECT for the Cross Country Rally run!!

Keep in mind something about the AOD trans. You cannot use WOT in OD of the AOD, it will drop down to 3rd gear at high throttle, to save the weak OD band. So figure out what your top speed will be based on the 1:1 3rd gear ratio. Use OD to cruise with, I'm not sure at what high speed the OD would realize too much load and slip.

If you can do it, find a reputable AOD builder who has done internal upgrades on an AOD. The AODE had a wider OD band, and the three required parts from those will directly swap into the AOD. Install a much bigger OD servo set(three parts), aftermarket. That's the holding power for the 4th gear.

Bauman had a shift kit which included a certain spring which was supposed to force the AOD to stay in OD at WOT. Do that at a certain risk, running in 3rd gear is much safer for the trans, even though the direct clutches are the second weakest link.
Baumann's 4R70W page

I would suggest going with the 4R70W, which has everything good from upgrades of the AOD and AODE. The 4R70W is the fully upgraded descendent of the AOD, the 98 having the last big worthy improvement(mechanical diode). Those are very strong, the AOD is questionable in any stock form, weak in most.

well, looks like I will be using original 14" Magnum 500s!
I have 3 of them now and will be getting another 5 of them this weekend in exchange for a seat and some other parts from the farm.
14"x7 Original Magnum 500s will get 245/60/14 tires on them.
They are 25.6" and with the 2.50 geared rear behind the AOD it will be running at 1723 RPMs at 75 MPH. Sounds decent!
NO chance of rubbing or need to do any fender wheel lip work.

Also some old slots!

Ran by a buddy's house today to talk about some parts for the Rally Car.
Well, he bought this for the motor & tranny.
a 351W with 4 laps on a rebuild and a small block C6 with a super trick 2bbl on it!

He is pulling the motor and a few other pieces than he was gonna scrap it!

Well, I struck a deal... $200!!
Deal is he leaves the over size Tranny cooler, cage, B&M shifter, dash with gages, rear end(not sure what the gears or the locker is, spool/trac-loc or welded), rims w/rings, and (ready for it?) a new 4-core radiator!!

SO for $200 I have a new 4-core radiator, B&M shifter, dash with gages and 4 factory 14" Magnum 500s with trim rings!

That makes 12-13 original Magnum 500s in my possession!

Depending on what else he leaves in it... maybe the 2-to-1 quick steer unit and steering wheel, possibly the kirkey race seat too.

This thing is HACKED up and beat down, seen ALOT of laps on the dirt track!
She is chopped about 4" too!

That one's been flattened in a bunch of places Smile!
I saw on Mythbusters that the dented/dimpled exterior gets better gas mileage...

Trip to the Torino farm today with David Ryland (from FB, he lives in Wichita) he brought me 5 more magnum 500 rims and 2 14" US Indy slots with center caps. We went to the farm, he got the seats from Ol'Brown and a 73 rear bumper.

we spent time looking over Brown and the others.

Thought was to use Brown for the Rally car.
get the blue 73 running and sell it....
NOPE, Brown just needs to much to be roadworthy and Bonnie needs too much engine work.
But Bonnie is solid and will now be the base ffor the rally car.
Andy is coming down to get the engine/tranny from Bonnie.
David wants the 73 nose stuff too.
>
I'll get a 72 nose on her and she is the Rally car!
Guess i got some work to do.

got the go ahead from the wife to try and get the Bronco I found!
1984 Bronco, 351W, 2bbl, Auto with A/C
It is/was a running truck, EVERYTHING is there!

So I can get this truck CHEAP enough to pull the entire motor and bracketry with accessories and other pieces I may need/want.
Sell what anyone needs/wants and scrap metal the rest...VOILA! Score a complete set up and motor for free or even make some cash in the end!

Bronco's are nice to find and save too if they are in good shape. The tail gate's seem to be a huge weak link(rust).

This one is rough and I have NO DESIRE to do anything but use the motor and sell anything that someone wants me to pull for enough cash to make it worth it. The tires and rims are worth it, the grill is aftermarket tube style, some driving lights, the A/C stuff and whatever else I can see that MIGHT help in the future.
Even thinking, the door mirrors.

Can you use the steering column in the rally car, or your Lola Mae? I don't know how much work it will be, but I'm going to use my old 93 Explorer column and the wheel for my Ranchero(cruise control and intermittent wipers too).Wink

Lola already has cruise, BUT I did notice the Bronco's wheel is THE SAME and it has cruise too! so all of that will come off. yeah gonna check out the wiper and some other stuff that is the same as our cars.

REALLY interested in what the gears and center chunk it has.
Looking at the size of rear sway bar, the end link set up and how it attaches to the rear end.

There are other things on it that can sell for a little cash that won't hurt the scrap weight when it goes to the scrap yard.

Carl check the rear axle if it's a 9" on that bronco.
Let me know when you want to do the engine and Trans removal. With the front clip off please make my life easy lol.
I also want to salvage the console off that ltd and if the headlight switch was ok Ron could use that from here with that killer ltd 2

I BELIEVE 1981 was the last year for the 9" in pickup and bronco.  Not that someone couldn't have swapped it out.

WELL, plans change and life is unpredictable so, Bonnie went to her new home today...

David Ryland of Wichita from the FB pages is going to get her running and on the road as a driver!
The title issue here in Kansas is NOT an issue.
As an antique he just needed some paperwork and a signed statement.
This car we know was clean titled and on the road a few years ago but the previous owner lost the title so no worries or issues.

BTW, I got my work out today. 500 plus repetitions of the "standing row" using my chain hoist to get her winched on to the trailer.

As for the car I am running for the Rally... LOLA MAE is going to make the run!!!
