quick question: on the head light housing, is the 74 gran torino a "one year only" thing??? (here is a pic of my right side  74,  note the grill mounts and the edge goes straight down)

here is a pic of a 73 (it has a curve there)

I think both those pics are of 1973 light buckets, and the top one looks kinda messed up?

1972 is a 1-off year

1973 is a 1-off year

1974-76 are the same

1977+ are LTD II with a solid 1 piece front fascia

google yahoo or whatever 1975 Torino img's and 1973 Torino img's

you'll find wrong years in the mix but mostly correct

the top one's mine Angry it's not messed up it's stripped down to the aluminum! but my left side one is cracked , i thought i'd just buy another good one cheap, but not finding any that are straight down like that right now, so i think i'll just have that one welded and use it, but i began thinking what about the grill? i bought a really nice used one a while back, so is it going to fit! well i looked at it and it has a 74 (D4OB) # on it so i should be fine!!

it's just the angle that makes the curved side of the bucket look kinda funny (the top 73)

the 73 grill is decidedly trapezoidal, the difference is more than enough that you'll know visually no problem

that's odd that the 1-off year you're finding & the 3 year run you can't

the potmetal should braze but watch out for silicon content

Ah, so those are pot metal also? That was the way they formed odd shaped parts back then. That's a crappy material.

Anything hotter than soldering will melt those parts, and that is sketchy too. The white metal used is usually a ZAMAK 3 alloy with a melting point of about 700F.
repair material for pot metal/white metal.
If you try solder, try to find a lead-free solder as the lead will eventually cause zinc rot.
It's not as crappy of a metal as you would think, as it casts easily, is reasonably strong, and is machinable. ZAMAK 3 the usual die-casting or spin-casting metal in the US.

I'm sorry Randy, the only repair I've heard of for that metal was a soldering gun used to braze to it. I don't have any experience with it other than from having the headlight buckets of my old 72 GT cracked from a wreck, and it wouldn't bend back at all. These days everything is a plastic, and repairing that is tricky too.

the guy that tried to weld it thought it may be pot metal, but i didn't think so looks like too good of material for pot metal, he suggested i try some of the aluminum solder that is sold at the swap meets, i told him that i have some

Problem with this metal is that it goes from solid to liquid with no visible warning QUICKLY, and it is a really fluid metal when it melts... If it's bent, it's done. the metal fatigues when bent/bent back and it splits along the crystalline structure/grains in the metal. Epoxy/J.B. Weld would work on it, but you have to give the metal some "tooth" and have it really clean to get adhesion.
