    Posted: 26-December-2014 at 11:46AM
I recently got my '71 Torino back on the road after more than 25 yrs in storage. When we parked the car, it had a strong vibration in 1st gear (3 speed manual) that resembled clutch chatter. Since putting it back on the road in Oct, 4 different clutches have been put in the car but the vibration is still there. I have heard suggestions of bad motor mounts and bad rear axle bearings. The car has done it with multiple drivers so we can rule out the loose nut behind the wheel.

Has anyone encountered this?

Follow-up: it was a bad transmission mount.

Welcome, you got it back on the road just in time to put it away for the winter! how did the mount get over looked while putting 4 clutches in it?

I wish I knew. My dad and I did all of the brake and engine work but decided to hire someone to troubleshoot that as neither of us wanted to pull the transmission while on our backs (we're not young). The first shop installed 2 clutches with no luck. I took it to a more knowledgible shop and they stated "The clutch is chattering". I said "We are on clutch #2, I don't think it's the clutch that's the problem", but they insisted and we installed 2 more. Mind you, I'm not paying for the 2nd installs. After #4, (which was a top of the line clutch) didn't remedy it, I immediately drove it back and took the service manager for a ride. He took it back and promised to make it right. To their credit, they did and have given me lots of free work to compensate for their mistake. Sorry, long winded response.

I parked it at mom and dads place in 1989. This is last year when dad and I brought it into the daylight for the first time in 24 years. Waiting on the rollback truck to take it to mom and dads new place.

First picture is from 2013: I parked the car at mom and dad's in 1989, this is before dad and I pulled her out into the daylight for the first time in over two decades to move it to their new house.

Second picture is the half clean, half dirty shot, 25 years of grime!

Third is when we finally got it rolling and ready to deliver to first shop.

Fourth is when we got the car back and I am preparing to drive the 330 miles from TN to OH.

I will post more later when the spam filter permits.

Nice car! I like how the line dividing the clean and untouched section lines up perfectly with the painted and unpainted garage wall. Nice touch. Cool vintage cans on the wall and looks like a late 50's something parked beside it?

Thanks all! The car to the right is dad's '58 Ford Custom 300. I grew up in the south but the Air Force took me all over the country, Ohio is where I ended up.

1st picture is when I crossed the KY border.

2nd is at the Limestone Cafe in Renfro Valley, KY.

3rd is when I crossed the OH border.

The trip was a bit nerve racking at times but we made it home in one piece.  I got a lot of waves and compliments along the way.

Yes. Original paint, interior, engine. There are a couple of tears on the drivers seat and the glove box needs a new hinge but other than that, the interior is in fantastic shape. The body has quite a few dents and chips and some rust on both rear quarters. It belonged to my grandad, he passed in 1988 and left the car to me. It has 58,000 original miles.

Thanks! I tried several times to buy it from Grandad when I was a young man. He wouldn't sell it, but told me I could use it anytime. There were many days I would stop by and take it out for a cruise around town. Of course I washed and waxed it for him. I 've had several people try to buy it from me over the past couple of months -this car's staying in the family.
